Trick to getting a head start

How do I get my first bunch of subscribers that you need to actually grow my channel? It seems like that is the hardest part.

Word of mouth! Advertise on Facebook to your friends, ask them to post your videos on their walls if they think it's funny/cool.
Your friends can help you grow so much because they can verify that your videos are cool/funny/worth watching.

Plus then you get proper feedback to help you grow and develop as well

I was already active on some forums in my niche, I used those to create a small 'hype' around my channel before I actually started doing serious uploads. Then when I started uploading subs came in quite easily, think I got my first 1000 subs in about 2 months.

advertise on social media is a big part but what helped me the most was working with other YouTubers

Make the kind of videos that people won't want to miss. A lot of people think subs drive views, but really views drive subs.

Best way would be to make a video that will catch peoples eye and get some custom thumbnails so when you post the video on facebook and such people see a really interesting thumbnail.
Also I would take down the donations button. No one does that kind of stuff until they have a reason to donate.
