Tips on advertising/growing a gaming channel?

Hello everyone! I have been posting videos kind of sporadically over the past 8 months (wish I could have stuck to a regular schedule but school and work got in the way). In that time I've gained little and I know my schedule didn't help and another thing that didn't help was little to no advertisement or exposure. For some of you veteran youtuber's that have been doing this for a while what are some good tips and tricks for advertisement and growth for someone who is starting off. Another question is how would someone go about using social media, aside from personal accounts, to advertise their channel and videos?

Everyone and their grandmother is doing a gaming channel. I've seen a lot, A LOT of gaming channels, and I'm only subscribed to a select few because their humor connects with me, and I genuinely enjoy watching their videos. Game Grumps have a great formula for making "let's plays", and they deliver. Your main focus in a gaming channel should be to be yourself, have fun, and be part of a community. This isn't just for gaming though, but for anyone that dares to be a YouTuber.

As lyfewithdragons said, it should honestly be about doing what you enjoy. If you connect with someone who watches your content they'll hopefully subscribe.
But just keep to your schedule as much as possible and engage with the community.
Twitter is a great way to do that.

That's why i'm not looking to be the next pewdiepie. I made an introduction thread that explained why I got into youtube but it can be a little disheartening when almost nobody watches them. I believe that there is an audience for everyone because everybody has a different style of humor. I'm just having a little trouble finding that audience and was wondering how everyone else found theirs just for ideas. I understand their are a lot of people in the gaming side of youtube which is why I'm not really aiming real high. If it does work out then cool, but that's not my intention.

Try and change the reason from what your videos are about, but why should people watch them? Are they shareable? Do they give advice? Do they entertain? Inspire? Etc. Try and think about that, and see what your reason will be.

Well I can give you advice on how I grew my gaming channel to almost 900 subs in a few months.

1. I started a gaming channel with the purpose of wanting to upload any game I played. I did this for about 2 weeks. I was uploading GTA, Walking Dead, World of warcraft and a few other games. I then realized that my world of warcraft videos were getting 4-5x the views of the other games so I started to just upload WOW gameplays and those got a good amount of views. So what i'm trying to say is find that ONE game that you could play on the channel and dedicate the channel to just that

2.Be yourself. I know this is said a lot but people overlook it. If you try to come off as something you're not, the viewers will catch on that and it will drive them away. People on my gaming channel kept commenting how they love that i was energetic and funny while doing gameplay so that worked for me.

3. Quality and Quantity: You need to upload HD gameplay meaning 1080 or 720. It's 2015 and people want to see HD not just standard. This is really important. Also, I see you said that you havent been able to upload because school gets in the way and stuff but if you really do want to grow a gaming channel you have to upload frequently and on schedule. For example, I was uploading a video a day and my subscribers knew that they could go on my channel every day and find a new video.

4. Just have fun and be patient. Man I can tell you, when I was uploading and wasnt getting the views or comments, I was discouraged but I kept going and built a fan base. My channel is called MrSickGames and I called my subscribers SickGamers and they loved it.

Again this is what I used to grow. I have not uploaded to that channel in months because I do have a main channel and my pc broke down but that channel is still growing daily

It's always good to stick to a schedule. I know it's hard. We do daily content on our main channel and at least twice a week on our gaming channel. Remember, that even if it's once or twice a week, it helps people know that is when they will be able to check out your content. Remember to share your videos when you can to certain communities, but not to overly spam them. Another thing is to remember to tag appropriately. For instance, for your 'Mount your friends' video. Do: 'Mount Your Friends Gameplay, Mount Your Friends Let's Play, Mount Your Friends Playthrough, etc.' It helps a little bit with exposure.

Good luck man, keep at it, and remember to have fun with it!

I would def suggest getting on some sort of upload schedule. When I post my videos to twitter I use hashtags of whatever game I'm playing. And I found a Twitter account that automaticly retweets it if you tag them in the tweet. Also use reddit.

Thanks for all the advice guys! I'm definitely still trying to find that one game that I can easily make good content on. As for dedicating my channel to that one game I probably wont do that. I'll definitely focus more on that but after a while I would probably lose interest. The upload schedule should be fine this time around. Back when I first started I was working 25+ hours a week, while going to school, and coaching a soccer team. I'll for sure be sticking to a regular schedule once I upgrade my equipment soon.
