What is the best way to get a screenshot from your video to make a thumbnail with?

HD settings->fullscreen->fraps or print screen button

Well if not in the editor, you could just go fullscreen at 1080p (if that's the video resolution) on the frame you want and screenshot it, and then put it into photoshop or whatever to put extra stuff on top of it if you want

Should be an option in whatever editing program you use. You can also open in media player classic or vlc and 'save snapshot' or similar.

Capturing and exporting the frame directly would be better quality than a screenprint.

My Elgato just has a 'capture' button which basically print-screens what you're looking at (any recorded footage) and saves it as a .png

Like i said either in the video editing program or a video player you can export the frame. Sounds like you are suggesting to watch the video and printscreen it, which is...sloppy.
