This ROSE will have THORNS and HERE THEY ARE! ... (Cringe)

Okay,

So clearly becoming a Youtuber isn't exactly the most original idea anyone has ever had since the dawn of time and space but it's certainly becoming a big thing (and by 'big thing' we really mean a flooded market). We, like so many others have decided to give it a shot, we feel as if we can offer something different to the platform in the form of unrehearsed, unplanned (for the most part,) banter between two long time friends with alcohol in the mix and a fire in our destructive banter!

We would never get incoherent, of our face's, rat arsed into oblivion drunk on camera because this wouldn't exactly be a productive or healthy means of creating episodes, but we both really like wine, so why not combine minimal reviewing whilst spearheading the episodes with themes of carnage, psychopathy and dog obsession?

We love making the episodes and have agreed to do a minimum of 50. If we haven't reached 150 subscribers by the 50th episode, we'll call it a day and reminisce our Youtubing experience fondly until death takes us! On the flip side, if we do surpass this figure, we will create more, go bigger, become darker, all in the name of entertainment and a unique learning experience in wine tasting!

So please, help and guide us, tell us what you think is great or lacking, general feedback, what would you like to see more or less of? Anything to help shape these episodes into a more dysfunctional physique! Like, subscribe, but most importantly share and leave comments!

Dysfunctional Frienemies simply can't wait to interact with you all!

By no means is my advice a guarantee to help your channel grow, but it's my personal opinion and my knowledge from experience.
So feel free to pick and choose which advice you like.

I watched your newest video "A Hungry Squirrel Against the Merlot of Humanity"

- First off would be get a good mic. I seems that you guys are going for a laid back talk show/ hangout type of video. I found it really hard to stay focused because the audio wasn't great (a lot of reverb). Because of that it was hard to follow what you guys were going on about. If people cared enough they would turn up the volume, but I feel most people would click away.
Edit: I just read the description, so I guess you know about it.

- For the description I would shift "Friends and Enemies" bit down, and make the beginning more about the video, so people know what they are watching.

- Also you can really see the connection between you two through the video which is good. Except for the fact that beginning drags on for quite a bit with you two joking around. It might be okay with better audio, but it would work better for sure with a fan base. If you're looking to get more viewers I would cut that down or spread it out somehow; otherwise most people won't care and click away.

- For your Channel, I would change your banner, it's really messy.

- Your icon could use some polishing too.

- Most people on this forum recommend a new thumbnail for each video. I would advise that too.

That's about all I have. I hope this helps!

@Alvan Many thanks for the feedback! A very thorough report! There is definitely some advice in there that we shall take on board and that we should have seen when uploading the first video!

-Audio is by far the biggest problem we face, I use a Canon Eos600d to film with, I have an external shotgun mic but it's really a cheap piece of crap - ideally I'd like a RodeNTG2 for this kind of thing but that is out of our price range so we use the on board recorder within the camera.

-What do you use to record your audio? There's only so much digital enhancements in the editing software can do..!

-As for the banner and icon, we have a close friend working on something for us to be uploaded within time - what we have was always temporary.

Again huge thanks! :cheerbeer:

I use my camera to record audio too (It's a really cheap/old camera). You can also hear reverb in some of my videos too unfortunately.

I'm also looking for something to record audio. I've heard good things about the "blue snowball" and the "blue yeti". they're are usb mics. The only thing holding back from those is that I want to make sketches, and I don't really want to bring my laptop everywhere with me.

I'm sure there are threads on audio somewhere on this forum.
I'm not very technical, so this is the most I can help you in terms of audio :\

@JasonHorton That's very true! I have a book on lighting I have in my to read pile! Though I'm sure some basic 101 lighting will help us out..! We're gonna implement all this advice over the next few episodes :)[DOUBLEPOST=1420623426,1420623179][/DOUBLEPOST]@Alvan Yeah, its my worst area to deal with in any way, but I managde to tinker with the sound on my editing software so fingers crossed you'll see a marked improvement in the next episode!

The shadows are kind of rough. It's really distracting, but an easy fix if you keep it mind before filming :)

Update, not the next episode but the one after, we've managed to eradicate 98% of the shadows! Many thanks for that advice!

@Alvan We've made one change so far! A unique thumbnail despite how shoddy it looks (next episode will be up in the next very soon!) they will get better with time and our friend is still working on the new banner and profile image! So thanks again for the info, we are implementing as much as possible :D

To be honest, since I think that's what you're looking for, your videos are REALLY clickbaity
Spot the difference

1. Doctors HATE her! Mom finds new trick to remove wrinkles!
2. Never sauvy ever licked a tadpole?

It's... just not there. Given your thumbnails say absolutely nothing about the video your retention rates can and will be terrible

@Stuart Johnson Thanks for the feedback there Stuart, I can kinda see where you're coming from yet we do aim to make a snappy title for each episode whilst maintaining a relevance to the content. I'm not a 100% on whether you have seen the episode or not but the relevance is there for example:

The type of wine being drank is a Sauvignon Blanc and the game that we play (as we usually play at least one game per episode) is 'Never Have I Ever' - so, 'Never Sauvy Ever' is a combination of those.

The 'Licked a Tadpole?' partly is in reference to something Tom says in the episode that stood out to me personally and thus we used all of that as the entire title.

And in regards to the thumbnails, we received some advice from another member on YTtalk about this and we have started to rectify it so that there is more relevance. It's all still a learning curve! I hope this clarifies in some small way :)

Thanks for taking the time to write a well thought out reply @Dysfunctional Frienemies , it's appreciated. Again, it's good you've looked towards improving your thumbnails and I'm glad you're looking to improve

On the topic of video titles, I still think you should clarify. For example:

'A hungry squirrel against the merlot of humanity' Yeah, it's good. It's eyecatching, and it's referenced in the video. However, the ENTIRE of the first two minutes of your video, is about sampling Marks & Spencer's wine. By thi point the average viewer would have clicked away, dissapointed by the lack of squirrels.
Your problem is not, your titles, rather the content of the video in relation.

A title that's just as good, but is more relevent:

'M&S Wine VS Dysfunctional Frenemies'
There you go! Who doesn't want to click that? But at the same time, it isn't implying that the topic is something that it isn't.

I hope to hear from you soon! :)
