The YouTube suggested videos are a big reason for my current growth, but I'm still a small channel. I've grown exponetially in the last month with subscribers and views. Like the other poster mentioned about the righ niche, I've found one with my channel. I was the first post good content about the game I do commentaries on which lead to a big presense in suggested videos. I don't know exactly how they ranking system works, but I have been actively trying to get my videos up there by tagging properly, getting people to comment in various ways, and without asking getting people to hit the like button.
I haven't actively promoted outside the method above, the game's forum and letters spelling my channel name out on my base in game. I am to the point now where I think it's time to start promoting more. I had someone ask to buy a t-shirt that I don't sell. I'm more surprised than anyone else with the speed of the growth, but I'm loving it so far.
500 subs a day would be amazing, but my goal has been triple digits in subs a day for a while, and I hit that number today. YouTube is controlling my exposure in a big way IMO, but I'm not complaining.
