The nerdy guy in the cool hat!
I have spent the last week or two reviewing a lot of videos on the reviews forum page, I rather enjoy it but half the time I tend to say the same things over and over again. So I thought I would make a post of the top five things that I think make a good channel. These are what I hold every new channel to even my own channel and trust me I sometimes fall short.
1. Quality Audio and Video
A channel needs to have good video and audio; I would say that audio is a little more important than video. All my videos are at 1080P and I just got a new condenser microphone so my audio is as good as I can make it. When you have really good audio and video it allows people to focus on what is being said or done in the video.
2. Have something worth saying or showing
I see some channels on YouTube that make videos just for the sake of making videos and they have nothing worth saying. Every video should contain something worth saying or worth showing off.
3. Have good branding
Good branding is really important to getting new viewers and building a fan base and these incudes having a good banner, avatar photo, thumbnails, a quality intro that is no longer than five seconds, a channel trailer and a well laid out channel page with playlists. All these things show your level of effort and will establish a brand that people will connect your content with.
4. Interact
Reply to every comment, delete every hate filled comments and comment on other videos you like, this will show that you value your viewers and will get you more viewers.
5. The 25% rule
Building a channel takes a lot of time and some people might get discouraged at their low view count but there is a very handy rule of measurement that many channels use to see how they are doing. Take 25% of your total number of subscribers and that is how many views each of your video should have, if you meet that then you are doing good. For example if you have 200 subscribers then each video should have at least 50 views.
Please take all this advice with the knowledge that I only have 155 subscribers so I am in no way huge yet but I have been around long enough to know these are the key points to make any channel successful. If you have all five of these things locked down then the only thing is to promote the hell out of your channel, get a twitter account, Facebook page and anything you can find to get your name our there but that is another post.
Tell me what you think of my list and if you think anything should be added or removed from it.
Later!
