The First 100: What's It Like?

Having passed 100 subs about a week or ago it took me about 4 months or so, and it feels different to me. When I first started, just as everyone has, I didn't get hardly any views, no comments and very few likes. Now, i get a couple comments on each video whether it be a Vlog or a Gaming video.
It took me a couple of months, but that was with some heavy promotion. I do also think a lot of my subscribers came over from my old, now defunct channel as well though.
It’s a good achievement to get past but don’t spent too much time looking at the various numbers on your channel, they can drive you crazy.

I passed 100 subs after around a month on my current gaming channel. Most of these subscribers where friends and people I met on minecraft servers/call of duty. As for a few people that just found my videos through my twitter posts and youtube searches.
Personally I don't think the first 100 is the hardest. I think the first 50k is the hardest.. channels seem to grow very slowly until they hit the 50k mark and then they start to just grow well by themselves normally hitting 250k a year after they hit 50k. Until you channel starts growing/snowballing without you needing to promote it, I would say that's the hardest part/stage. I'm still yet to hit this stage and I'm not sure I ever will on any of my channels but I would really like to!

It took me exactly a month too. I don't know about the theory that the first 100 is the hardest, but a channel that is growing steadily and organically will be gaining more daily subs as time goes on. So yes, for me I got my second hundred quicker than my first hundred and I'll make my second thousand quicker than I made my first thousand.
My advice however would be to not have sub count as a goal. Instead, make your goals to increase views and audience retention because that will make you shift your focus to producing quality content and less on promotion. In the long-term that will give you the exponential growth that you are looking for.

We have sadly not still hit 100 sadly, but I think it ould be we have took a different route, as a lot promote via facebook and other media, and we tried it failed, and with us inspired by smosh we have gone down more a entertainment route, instead of Gaming, music, or how to's. I hope we still make it to the "100" goal as we do our real life entertainment to the odd gaming, But there is no rush just time focus and quality!

how long have u guys been on youtube? neither of my channels have hit 100 yet. I know the reason for both too. my gaming channel has only been up a short time and as for my original one, I don't upload videos very often. just when I feel like it. my gaming channel is my main focus right now though.

we have been around for nearly a year but only had 3 uploads, but made about 12 in the last 5 -6 weeks of content

Well said, and something I'm glad to have read. I need to remind myself of this more often than I like to admit. I get so wrapped up on how long it has been since my last subscriber that I lose focus on the big picture.
