The desperate world of YouTube wannabes

Crown

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The title of the thread is the headline of an article in the media about how the lure of fame and fortune drives some people to desperation and even violence.

A brief summary of the examples cited in the article:

For every millionaire PewDiePie or Logan Paul, there are a thousand frustrated YouTubers desperately trying to get more views. Some aspiring vloggers pushing themselves to make increasingly outrageous, and sometimes disturbing, videos which have resulted in criminal charges.

Last month, Monalisa Perez was jailed for six months for shooting her boyfriend, 22-year-old Pedro Ruiz III, in the chest for a YouTube video. Ruiz died after bullet penetrated an encyclopedia he was holding for the stunt.

Mike Martin, who ran the popular YouTube channel DaddyoFive, lost custody of his children after posting multiple clips of him 'pranking' his two young kids. Videos include Martin convincing son Cody he had been adopted out to another family, pushing him and bloodying his nose. Cody often ended up red faced, crying, screaming, or throwing things out of frustration, once even threatening to kill himself. In May last year, Rose Hall, the biological mother of Mike Martin's two youngest children, Cody, nine, and Emma, 12, was granted custody of the kids.

In 2015, Sam and Nia Rader , from Wills Point, Texas, made headlines when they were accused of faking a miscarriage.

California shooter Nasim Aghdam was an established YouTuber posting militant Vegan videos, bizarre 'parody' clips, and angry rants about YouTube policies. On Tuesday, that fury boiled over and Aghdam shot a man and two women with a handgun when she stormed YouTube 's headquarters in San Bruno.

______________

What drives people to these extremes? Are people really that desperate for views and subs?!

Thoughts?

Andy Warhal have talked for the15 minutes of fame we all might have.
He didn't defined what (positive/negative) and for what (good/evil) this publicity will be!
:P

I am not sure if it is Youtube alone that drives this crazyness.
I think that it just amplifies it and projects it to the whole planet.
People have done (and still do) bad or crazy things for any reason.
fame and money was always a "good" motive for humans...

For every "hard" youtuber prankster to his kids,
well, the analogy for domestic violence is so big...
The "gold" fever, gambling, anything... It is in our nature.
Guess that if Calligula llived today would be
a big youtuber with a cinema camera! XD :P
So.
The only difference there might be is,
that now we video record those things.
From the era of tapes when people recorded an "I love you"
or painted a wall in the dark with a heart and a name,
we went to "OMG! he proposed me!"
2 million views to find out that he proposed a weekend...
:/

People will always be attracted by easy money.
Yes Youtube experimented and counted on people's greed.
The only thing the people do not realize is that for big and easy money,
they must already have money or connections or a brand new idea.
:)

Pretty much what he said. In the past there was television, stuff like reality shows or now talent shows, before that other things (but I'm too young to remember them) but Youtube is just one of the avenues people use in the hunt for easy money and fame.

Youtube is a giant platform with 1,300,000,000 users and 300 hours of video every minute!

If youtube made people crazy than the planet would be destroyed by now. No, what it is, is people who are already messed up in the head.

There are fat people, but you don't blame the food they eat, you blame THAT person for their own bad habits.

You don't blame gun for shooting that girl's husband, you blame the stupidity of that person.

To blame a platform is somewhat, deplorable, almost disgusting. Youtube is a service, not a creature that stabs a stinger into our head and injects parasites to make us go insane (I think)

Out of the millions of users, we only have a fraction do stupid things. We shouldn't blame youtube, it just (as someone said) brings it to light to the whole world.

Youtube is a marvelous site, that if done right, can be a beacon of learning, entertainment, and social networking! It's sad to see people stoop so low as to assume it's doing such things.

For me, my hobby and somewhat dream is to become a youtube star. I know it probably won't happen, but that my hobby and hope keeps me happy, and I spend my time being productive and creative!

People will never understand the worth of Youtube until they look at the good and the bad and unbiasedly judge it.

It's sad how many people do crazy things just for Youtube. But I wouldn't blame Youtube for these crazy things happening. Youtube is a service that anybody can use, free or paid to make their video steaming and sharing so much easier. Where would we be without it?

To me these people who have these cases against them or are already doing jail time were already mentally unstable. I'm sure they were doing these horrible things way before they started a Youtube channel. Then had a horrible thought of, "Hey, maybe some other people would love to see me do (insert horrible idea/disgusting footage)."

I will never blame Youtube for these bad creators. Cause without Youtube I wouldn't have met so many of you. =] So don't give up when chasing your dreams.

There have always been people who will do anything for fame and fortune, but until social media came along there was an uphill battle to get there. Now someone can literally upload a video and become an overnight success. The chances of becoming famous instantly are rare and that's why people are going to such extremes to create their break.

This. Exactly this. Everyone is always looking for the Get Rich Quick Scheme. When people found out there were a lucky few that managed to make a living (or at least enough money to buy cool stuff) by making Youtube videos, they figured that was the next big Get Rich Quick Scheme. They either resort to doing to insane thing for those sweet sweet views, or lash out when they realize it's not as easy or quick as they thought it would be. Or both.
