It's not really a "long shot" if you know what you're doing, and stick with it.

I don't see anything wrong with doing youtube for the money. I think if you're not enjoying it people can tell and won't come back. I think if you're fake people won't come back.
It would be like going into business for yourself, it's just that you choose entertainment and via youtube.

I think that OP meant something different. May be he wanted to say that youtube is not a place where everyone can earn decent money easily. Thats why you shouldnt aim for money starting your channel because its rather difficult to get enough audience for it.
But as you grow bigger there is nothing wrong when you want to make some profit. It can only improve contents quality. Because if you make better videos it gets more views and you get more money out of it
