Tasting American Candy

Hi guys,

I have created a new video called tasting American Candy.

I am not sure why you cant see my shirt properly. It looks black but its a green chequred shirt.

I filmed the video on my DSLR, I havd 2 soft boxes on me.

Any suggestions?

I think your shirt is so dark because everything else in the scene is quite bright - you you have the choice between under exposing the shirt or over exposing the rest of the scene. Perhaps you could get away with setting the exposure compensation up a stop or two, might make things brighter. Idk, try photographing your self all lit up and check out the histogram.

How do I increase the exposure?

It depends on the camera - I know on my Canon 700d I can set the exposure higher or lower for taking a picture, haven't tried it on video. In video, if in manual, I can change iso, shutter speed and aperture to change the exposure. I just think that since everything in your scene was pale or cream the camera had try to not over expose the walls and your face by making everything darker. Cameras just don't have the dynamic range of our eyes so it really stands out in video.

Quite frankly I didn't care bout your shirt when I was watching the video. You were plenty entertaining... if you were making a video about that shirt then that might have been a problem.

Can you reccomend me what settings to use?

Cool. Its a nice camera.

You need to turn up the brightness setting on your shirt though, I mean the video looked pretty good to me. If you have an extreme between shades of colour this problem is going to arise.

However if you pop it in manual mode you can turn up the iso (or preferably open the aperture more and decrease the shutter speed to avoid noise. More iso means more noise, I believe that you are better off having the scene really bright and turning iso down to make the image dark enough than the other way round changing shutter speed and aperture has other effects on the video as well - like high shutter speed can make stuff look choppy.

I shoot at 720p at 50 and things can be pretty choppy - I render out to 25fps so its not a problem (the camera doesnt do 25fps at 720p though.)

Really its just about experimentation. Different lenses make adifference too - like the kit lens that comes with the cam only goes down to f3.6 at 18mm, I have another lens, a prime, that goes to f2.8 - that extra light makes a difference.

Check out some photography stuff online somewhere, that stuff is pretty much directly transferable to videography.
