Sudden Drop in Views from Suggested Videos

I had a pretty large number of views coming from Suggested Videos and then they suddenly dropped overnight. The views coming from Suggested Videos are still dropping everyday. All other traffic sources remained same.

Has anyone noticed something like this? Could something I did cause my videos from being pulled out of Suggested Videos? I haven't botted or did anything illegal. Only thing that changed between this was my IP address, but doesn't everyone's IP address change from time to time by their ISP? What can I do to get my videos to appear on suggested videos again. I just want to get some stories of how other people coped with decline in traffic from suggested videos. Thanks.

Well, if suggested videos are really related to view retention rate (like the rumor says), then maybe a lot of the people who were clicking on your video in the Suggested column were clicking away soon after.

EDIT: I was just looking over your channel. Interesting concept. If we did a collaboration it would be crazy!

It's pretty much cyclical. For videos that really take off the views always seem to come back down to earth after about a month and settle in at about 20% of the peak views. I checked out your channel. Keep making great content. You'll have more that take off. Once you've had one or two that take off like that it seems like YouTube get faster and feeding you traffic to see where your new videos should land. Focus on creating a lot of good content and over time your views will balance out.

I went from getting 120k views/day to 50k views/day overnight (a few years ago, and on this channel). My views steadily rose back up to 80k views/day and then overnight got chopped down to 10k views/day. It's been up and down ever since but I was devastated at the time because I had just lost my job and Youtube was helping keep us afloat for a couple months.

Oh, and it was all traffic from suggested videos that was affected.

YouTube is a fickle beast, thats a massive drop did you go back up again from the 10k views a day to a similar high amount from suggested videos? It seems like a rollercoaster ride the experience you had there.

My other channels weathered that algorithm change okay but this channel's content was very much driven by the fact that the suggested video algorithm favored views back then. The specific reason for that algorithm change was to stop all of the low quality 'reply girls' type videos that were infecting the suggested video sections of every new popular video. They would put a cleavage shot as the thumbnail and the commentary and content in the video was virtually nonexistent. These videos would always get 10-25% likes/dislikes and youtube saw it as a problem (which it was). So they made a few major changes to the related video algorithm (it was related videos back then, of course), first in December of 2011 (December 15th to be exact...black Thursday lol) and then one they told us about in advance. March 9th, 2012, which was a huge update and affected a lot of people. Below is the ugly graph of it all from my channel that was affected the most (WRW) (the two drops are December 15 and March 13-14 even though the algorithm change we were told would be March 9th. That was disappointing since many of us thought we avoided getting hit after the 9th passed):

And if you want more entertainment, this is one of the many Youtube partner forum threads complete with people freaking out over the algorithm change and their sudden loss of views...trying to make heads or tails from it.

These changes happened a couple years in a row and always seemed to hit right before Christmas, which I didn't think was right. I would like to think that my channel's videos were 'legitimate' compared to the videos. It was a little bit of a scary time to have a decent portion of your total income come from YT...so many huge changes.

Thats good you can make sense of it with it being obvious as to why, I have seen a few channels drop very suddenly similarly but without any obvious algorithm change that I would love to make sense of, they have gone from being featured consistently in suggested videos to not being anywhere to be seen overnight and their views per day dropping like flies.

Glad to hear you got back on track after it too, it must have really been bad for even larger channels at the time too, imagine not having any backup and fully relying on it for that to happen overnight.

Well, this channel never got back on track. I currently get about 25k views/day which is a fraction of what it used to get, but I'm a realist and knew that couldn't last. I will be trying to resurrect this channel soon though. We'll see how it goes. You have to roll with the punches...like you said...YT is fickle. They are constantly tinkering with the algorithms.
