Subscriber count makes itself increase?

In the dead subscribers thread (which for some reason the forum refuses to link here) someone posted something that made me think -

they do have value because it makes the number look high where it encourages other people to want to subscribe to you because they see that the number count is quite high so most likely they would think that "hey, this person might good because many people are subbed to them"

- so if a higher number attracts more people to increase said number and you kind of believe in such - whatever it is called - that would also imply that a lower number prevents people from subing.
which then as consequence could lead to the assumption that just using some "get a higher number count"-service would actually make sense because even dead subs help you growing.
I believe in that statement that content is king on youtube. But if you don't get any exposure nobody will be able to see, said content so you kind of have to get loud to get some attention. i really would prefer just giving subtle hints to remind people to sub. But if you start believing in such psychothings i would be better adviced to like just get the number up at any cost.

So what do you believe in?

Hmm yeah I suppose your right in this fact, hey well done for spotting that, I see people increase faster when they get more subscribers and views so must be linked with this statement.

I do agree with this. Content is of course important too (I won't sub to a crap channel with a million subs for e.g.), but it does help ease things along quite alot.

I know that many views come from passers by without accounts, but the most important thing - channel interaction - mostly comes from the people who liked your content enough to subscribe to it. My commenters are awesome, I get quite a few on each video and I'd happily have a lower views count, but plenty of activity to hundreds of thousands of views but nobody talking to me lol.

Agreed! :) Srsly i wouldve never spotted that xD And unfortunately its true :( Bcoz pples dont have a high amount of views or subs :'( But that doesnt make the content from that one person the most terrible content evah xD I mean ya can have super low amount of subs but your content can be amazing and THATS what pples shuld do ;) Most pple judge a channel from the amount of views and subs :( But this thread is rlly helpfull ;)

Of course this is true. I might have to struggle my butt off to make it to 1000 subs whereas my youtube buddies with more subs and views get 1000 a week or even better in a day. It can be frustrating but I just have to remember that I will be there if I keep it up, hopefully. I had more subscribers on my last 2 channels that I had to delete and start all over. Its much harder, but one day this thing will work on autopilot. Sort of. I don't even know if I think content is key. I don't see a lot of bad content really so if large portions/majority are making quality content then it makes it harder for us newer channels to shine. Hang in there. I'm coming up on 2000 subs and I'm super happy that I got that far in since I started my channel 10/3/12.

i think is tru and false at the same time. why. ok lets go with the true one.. if you have more subs like people would be more likely to subs but thats not true at all, because you can have too many subs but if the content of that persons sucks or you dont like it, just becausege gas too many subs your not gonna sub to him, right? o_O i think subs help only if there legit, because when someone subs to you their subscribers see that he/her subscribe to you on their feeds so is more likely that they'er going to check out your channel and see what you got.. if they like it they're gonna sub to you. so legit subs helps. ded subs not at all..

A higher subscriber count alone doesn't get people to subscribe-your content gets people to subscribe. The reason why larger channels have an easier time getting subscribers is because a larger subscriber base shares more of your videos-which leads to more exposure and more subs. You have 100k subs with 99k dead subs and 1k in active subscribers, your growth rate will the same as if you had 1k subs.
