hmm well i just tried resizing it to what you said 500 x 120...and it makes it long and squishy like a banner...
and...well yea you cant see the image at all like that either >.<

is because you are resizing the image as it is.. and its stretching that image.. you should make a new file with the dimensions mentioned earlier, then put and and manage to fit the area of you want to be in the image..
