Strategically using Interactive Cards to boost Audience Retention

I kind of stumbled upon this technique without thinking about it.

I always like to go and look back at my audience retention to see how people are receiving my videos.

I would look at the little spikes in audience retention and then go to those parts of the videos to see what got peoples interest.

I realised pretty fast that when a card would pop up or I had a graphic pop up on the screen the retention would pop up.

So like PositivelyBrainwashed I started to put the cards or pop up graphics at regular intervals where retention had dropped in the past.

Good to know that. Is there anyway to tract in the analytics how often people actually click the featured videos? My main problem with featured videos is that not all my videos have the same length so I just put them in the last 15 seconds. But I'll have to play around and think carefully which videos I want to put cards or not.
Under Traffic Sources click on Video Cards and Annotations. It seems to group it under there since I haven't used Cards or Annotations this whole year and I have steady traffic in that section. I believe the videos it lists are where the views came from, not the videos that got views because of cards.

As far as placement, I went through my top 5 videos that receive more than 90% of all my views and averaged the time where their retention drops to 50%, which is at 45 seconds in.
