I'm not yet ready to believe that. If a lot of the search results are videos with high watch time, YT will put the already popular YTers on page 1. I wish YT would start randomly suggesting small but good channels. If they suggest 10 big channels, why not have 1 small one among them and see how it fares.

YouTube already does this, but they only do this to a small number of people at first. If those those initial viewers liked the video or watched it through, YouTube will assess and then suggest it to slightly more people. Again will monitor those user and adjust. This forms a feedback loop. Bad videos or maybe "good" videos that nobody cares about will be pushed even further down in the search. That's assuming the video is even search friendly.

I think it's a similar process that Facebook uses to determine if a post will make it to your news feed.

Lets assume that a particular video is fairly common one like vlog. There are a lot of other vlog videos out there as competition. You don't have a whole lot of chances to get a good impression from the very few viewer that will see your suggested video in the first place. How is YouTube going effectively pair up a vlog video up initially as a suggested video? It going to be a challenge. YouTube has to then figure out the topic and the appropriate demographics to suggest that video to. A vlog on the same topic can have different approches and styles and not everyone will like it. It would be unfortunate if the first few people just didn't like the video.

I'm a small channel and YouTube is definitely doing me a favor. I did a video about setting up a ROKU. That video was down on page 8 and now made it up to the top page. I think it got to the top because of the feedback loop and it's also easy to pair up with other ROKU videos. Most of my traffic is from YouTube suggesting my video.

I also did a video about changing a timing belt on a Ford Focus. This easy to pair up. All YouTube needs to do is pair up with other Ford Focus or timing belt videos. Also there isn't very many Ford Focus timing belt videos out there either. I don't have a whole lot of competition for that particular topic.

I guess if you want YouTube to help you get noticed you have to help YouTube out first by putting out unique, searchable videos.
 
I have use personally the paid advertisements and it does help but don't expect a huge amount of subs because it takes time to master the paid advertisement and learn how to optimize your money as well but you have to invest a good amount its not cheap. If you are starting use free resources like Twitter, Facebook and others but everyone has their own experience. I'm sharing mines and everyone has success their own ways that's they way I look at it.
 
I've tried spending on a video that I worked called "The Comeback." The reason I did was because, I wasn't posting for more than 2 months because, I had exams and when I "Came back" I wanted to do something awesome that screams "I'm Back!"So, I worked on it for more than 2 weeks and I advertised it for 2 weeks on YouTube. I used a special cut up version of it so, people would actually go to my channel to check my video out and also, the channel is self. The video got views but, only less than 1% Subscribed. I was pretty bumbed. Anyways, you can check my the video out if you want and also, Advertising would only work if you're a big channel because then, you can show off how big you are in the Ad.
 
It is definitely possible to be a self-promoting yet successful YouTuber. In fact, I think it's the best way to go considering there's no guarantee that paid advertising would work. At least if you personally go and try to advertise yourself, you would be doing it in an effective way.
 
I don't think you can make it without spending money. Unless you already own what's needed but, were using them for something else. However, if you want to make it. Then, you'll have to spend some money or a lot of money depending on what you own already...
