Starting up a new channel

Hey Guys,

First time positng on this forum.

I've recently decided that I'd start a new YouTube Channel. It will revolve around the use of NBA footage and what not. I'm fairly certain that I can garner quite a bit a views, I just had a few quesitons, If I'm going to be using NBA game footage, can I still make money on my videos? and What suggestions can you guys give to get my channel fired up - I'm hoping to get some advice based on your experiences..

I'm a n00b at this, and defintely need to understand the ins and outs before I get started.

Thanks!

You can only make money about things you make/own. I don't think NBA footage can be used to make money for you.

Agree with the above. You cant monetize video content when you are using copywrite material. It needs to be all your own content to be successfully monetized.

Wait, are you using footage from the NBA games? You could end up getting enough views and subs to get a gaming network partnership, but my only worry is that you won't have enough variety on your channel. You would have to be VERY good at what you do to stick to one subject and make it work!

Definetly not hating bud, hope you really succeed :)

Hi , I'd suggest reading this http://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/what-is-copyright.html

NBA footage would fall under "Audiovisual works: Such as TV Shows, Movies and online videos".

Could you give us more information on what sort of videos they will be? If you are reviewing the footage by using footage you own then it may fall under fair use http://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/fair-use.html however if you are purely uploading content you don't own you will definitely be under threat of a copyright strike and cannot make money from them types of videos.

Start up as you won't but please don't try to upload the entire clip, if youre reviewing or you have a news type of channel then that's great since it cannot be subjected to copyright, however as I mentioned do not UPLOAD entire clips. That just ridiculous because if you're
News reporting then a short clip is more than enough to demonstrate you're point of view. So get along but don't do a mistake of uploading the entire clip.

One of things that I wanted to point about NBA footage is that its not the same as boxing footage or anything of that nature. NBA footage is fair game to be seen and uploaded on YouTube and will never be taken off as the NBA finds that it will only increase the popularity of the game. For that reason, you can find entire games on YouTube and will never get taken down.. Does that still count as Copyright footage?

Heres a channel that uses NBA footage: watch?v=hCI0isCbbFk. Maybe you guys can shed some light on whether he makes money off his videos..

THanks for the replys so far

You can't make money off footage you don't own without 1.) permission 2.) it qualifying as fair use (a review of it or something).

When you see Adverts on videos with copyrighted content that is usually the owner of the original footage claiming it so that they can earn money off of it instead of getting it taken down.

When you say, doing a review. Does that mean I can show clips, but just not the whole game or extended periods of the game. I just want to gauge what would be allowed. I wouldn't want to get started and find out I was completely wrong.
