Starting my own Graphics Studio.

So basically, at the age of 16, I am going to attempt my first business adventure.

I plan to start an online graphics company, where customers can order custom work for personal/business use.

I'm going to try and cover a few of the basics first. Such as,

- Social Media Branding (Twitter/Facebook/YouTube etc)
- Corporate Logo Design
- Business Cards
- Wedding Invitations

and so forth. This is just to build up a portfolio before I approach printing companies so I'm able to not only provide the designs but to also have them printed and sent out to the customers as well.

What do you guys think? Is this a good idea? I'll also be finding other Graphic Designers that would like to take part in this.

I'm going to finance the project myself, but I'll try and utilize as many free utilities as possible. I pay for my own internet connection, licenses for my programs and such. A lot of dealings will be done over Skype, Email or Phone so it shouldn't be too difficult to manage.
Definitely build a small portfolio first before you start charging.
I also suggest you involve yourself in your local community as well.

Approach small businesses and people who are starting up a project to see if they would like anything done pro bono. A lot of small businesses are getting deep into social media to expand their reach so it should help you network with "real" people and gain experience. When you go in, you should bring in a draft of some kind to show them what you can do for them, that is, unless you have an already built portfolio--that portfolio should not be only Youtube-related. Green Veggies Company looks better than coddude101. :cat2:[DOUBLEPOST=1389943765,1389943545][/DOUBLEPOST]

Also, how is self-employment done in Australia? You should get a tax/business license so you can claim work expenses. Graphic programs are expensive! :hungover2:

Self employment is rather simple. You don't even need to pay taxes unless you earn over $18,200 a year. I think I'll need to get a business license, but other then that it should be fine.

I'll just say good luck, there's a ton of competition out there. Like, really a lot. Make sure you build up a good portfolio first, I would never order anything off anyone unless they had a decent portfolio.
Another thing is read up on graphic design and print, I have no idea what level your knowledge is but if you want to print and design stuff, there's a fair bit of stuff to know ^^
(colours, typography, etc)

Yeah, I'm aware of most of the printing process. My uncle prints t-shirts/car stickers and such and has given me a few pointers, he was the first person I approached when I had this idea.
