Sony Vegas Problem?

So recently after rendering a few videos I have noticed the finished file is just a black screen all the way through. I have also had a video turn into a 15 second black screen. Why is this?

Couple of quick things:
  • Make sure you're not writing to your boot drive
  • Make sure you have RAM (and don't have other processes running that are being memory hogs)

  • Make sure you have RAM (and don't have other processes running that are being memory hogs)

This one is likely to be the biggest factor. After you render a video, if you watch the video file before uploading it to something, your accessing the file directly through your CPU.

That can cause a number of things, including lag and black screens. There are times that I've had to walk away from my computer while editing because it was frustrating just to sit there and wait for peaks on a video to load.

Needless to say, I need a new computer.

That can be two things though - it can be RAM, but very often it's an issue of disk I/O. Which is why using an external drive (or better yet, a RAID) can be very helpful in combatting this issue.

Very true, indeed! I was mostly speaking from my aspect of it. Generally attempting to do taxing things on a laptop won't give you the most positive experience.

I've also been meaning to invest in an external drive.

For noobs like me, what exactly is a RAID? What does it do? I looked it up but I don't fully understand. Is it just a hard drive?

I'm very new to Youtube and video editing in general and I ran into a similar problem. After finishing my video, I replayed it and there were parts that would be completely black or there would be some black & white distortion lines showing up every so often. I'll try writing to my external hard drive next time and see if I run into this problem again.

A RAID is basically multiple hard drives that act as one. So when you read or write with it, it's faster, because you're not limited by the disk speed of a single hard drive.
