That is correct. Because your video IS an ad, it does not have Ads of its own, so you do not get a large monetary gain from this.
The big thing about this is that you can gain new subscribers, views on other videos, likes, and comments. It's more for exposure, which will help you gain more on the videos you monetize in the future.

I think you're a bit confused.
YouTube/Google is in charge of setting advertisements on people's videos.
By setting one of your videos as an ad, you give yourself a chance to be put through the cue of channel advertisements.
Then, after a little while, YouTube will go through the other videos in the cue, and your video will get shown.

No no, I still don't think you understand.
How this works is you set an advertisement, and then YouTube may play it before someone else's video (just like a pre-video commercial).
After that, then you can switch the advertisement to something else, and get another chance at gaining a bunch of views. That video will the play on other people's videos, and you will continue to get views.

You can not control who's videos your ad is played on... it is random.

Good question. My video was 3 minutes long. With YouTube ads, viewers can skip them after 5 seconds. That's why it's very important to have your videos be entertaining in the first 5 seconds. On average, the people viewing my advertisement actually stayed and watched half of the video (1:30).
 
oh thats cool, I have never seen a youtuber ad in someone elses video. Did you know which youtuber it was who had your video as ad?
