Someone Impersonating me?! What should I do??

IftiBashir

Undiscovered....
Hi all,
I received the below email from a company I have worked with in the past as they were suspicious and wanted to check if it was me or not. Luckily they had my details on file and contacted me directly to highlight the issue!

It seems someone is trying to impersonate me to try to get free stuff!
I have contacted my YouTube account manager to see if they can help in any way - is there any way I can track the email back to a YouTube Channel??

Here is the email the user sent to a company I have previously worked with:

review of the product on youtube! I was wondering if your company had any products that you wanted me to test out. Just so you know after month or so I send the product back to you. My YouTube channel name is iftibashir. I have 14.023 subscribers! If you have any products shoot me an email at xxxxxxxxx@gmail.com
Thanks, warren

xxxxxxxxx@gmail.com[DOUBLEPOST=1405699637,1405699535][/DOUBLEPOST]Or should I email the person to let him know Im onto him????

Yes most likely you'l have to get direct contact with youtube, than the email address registered can be searched in there data base and see whats there youtube channel, or you could google there email and see what comes up

Deciding on whether to contact the person directly and kindly asking him to refrain from using my channel name.........[DOUBLEPOST=1405700779,1405700718][/DOUBLEPOST]Ah, my account manager got back to me (within 10 mins!!) and said I should report it via a supplied weblink.......

So, report him or give him a chance?

I would ask the company that supplies products to you to send back an email asking for the mailing address and then have the company file a report with the local police wherever that person lives. It's in their best interest to shut this guy down.

Thank you.
I have filed a report with YouTube/Google for impersonation. In the meantime I have also emailed the company back and asked for them to request an address - great idea![DOUBLEPOST=1405707180,1405702359][/DOUBLEPOST]Ok - I have an address!![DOUBLEPOST=1405708315][/DOUBLEPOST]So I decided to email him.....

This is my email......

Hello,

RE: Mr XXXXX XXXX
424 XXXXX Road
Great Falls
VA XXXXX

We have been contacted in conjunction with an allegation we take rather seriously.
It has come to our attention that the above named individual has been contacting companies stating he runs our channel, requesting free items. We have received evidence of such emails.

Such actions not only result in impersonation, but if any items had been sent, would have been noted as theft by deception.

We are currently in contact with our partners and will leave it up to them to decide on their chosen course of action as to whether they wish to pursue matters further - at least 1 company has stated they take impersonation very seriously and are looking to contact your local law enforcement agency.

I have, for the moment, requested they halt any action until we have had a chance to contact you, in order for you to explain your actions.

I await your response before deciding on the appropriate course of action in these circumstances.

Kind regards
[DOUBLEPOST=1405708484][/DOUBLEPOST]And here is the response........

I'm sorry it won't happen again I just wanted some products

And a few minutes later another one.....

I just wanted a mount and it seemed like you got tons a free stuff. I did not realize what I was doing because I am only a 14 year old kid it won't happen again can we please just drop it. It won't happen anymore.

Finally, my response:

We have built a relationship with our channel sponsors through hard work. Hence we take channel impersonation very seriously - as do our sponsors.

As you have noted, we have a huge range of contacts and such activities filter through to us rather quickly.

I will pass your response on to my legal department and trust they will be in touch should they feel any further action is necessary in this case.

Kind regards.

Deciding on whether I want to take this further or not.......
Now that I have a full name, address, and admission of guilt, I have a reasonable case I would imagine.
Maybe the warning would be enough??.......hmmmm............[DOUBLEPOST=1405708995][/DOUBLEPOST]lol - after all that, now he wants to ask me a few questions about my YouTube channel so that he can start his own!!

Fist impersonate me, then ask for my help???!!!!

I'd just leave it alone at this point. I wouldn't even have emailed in the first place-I would have left it up to the company that supplies you with products as they were the ones that he was trying to defraud. There's nothing to be gained with further communication. The only thing you would do by answering questions at this point is to feed him more information so that he can try this again with another supplier.

Yup. I've stated it's with my legal team and left it at that. Let him stew over it!
