I Love YTtalk
I agree to an extent. But, I don't mind saying once in a while, in the comment section of a fellow musician something like, "Hey I'm a musician as well, I'd love if you would check out my channel!". I have done this before, but I agree it can get out of hand too. I was subscribed to someone last year that commented NOTHING but copy and pasted messages saying "Please check out my channel, etc".
Yeah, I don't quite understand sub for subbing. I don't know why you would want subs that aren't even going to watch the videos you make.
I think everyone promotes themselves in different ways. Personally, if someone says "I'd love if you would check out my channel" - I pretty much never do.
If someone makes a comment on my videos that doesn't ask that, I'm much more likely to, oddly enough.[DOUBLEPOST=1366516136,1366516005][/DOUBLEPOST]
I guess you could look at it like that, but from the perspective of the Community is What I'm Getting at here.
I think it's challenging to define the "Community", really. Part of the community is people who make videos for a living. And if their content is good - I'm gonna watch it. Your point about sincerity and passion is valid - but the folks who are passionate about what they do tend to do well on YouTube as is. But as a viewer - if I'm taken in by what they produce, I don't see why I should hold anything against them.
That'd be like boycotting a movie because one of the actors is obnoxious in real life.
