Should I create a second channel?

I run a fairly large channel (170k subs) but until recently, the engagement / views hasn't been great.

I'm a full stack developer, which means I both code and design -- thus, I cover both code and design tutorials, which very few people do. Usually, youtubers are only proficient at one, and therefore they only cover one or the other.

I'm beginning to think covering both spreads out my audience too much, which is one reason why I might not have had as much success as I've wanted to.

Would it make sense to create a secondary channel where I *only* cover design, and use my current channel to cover code?

I just took a look at your channel, it looks like each video you produce deals with a very specific topic in your niche.

WIth 170,000 subs any other channel may expect 10,000+ views within the first 48 hours of producing a video, but I wonder if there are 10,000 people that would watch a tutorial about "Using Cubic-Bezier Animations for Page", or "ProtoPie Proto Typing"? It may just be that you have reached saturation point for the growth in your niche.

According to Tube buddy you had over 400,000 views last month but gained almost 8000 subscribers, which is a huge sub to view ratio. It doesn't surprise me that so many people subscribe to you if they are in your line of work. Your channel must be a valuable resource for them, but probably not every video you publish is.

I would be very reluctant to split such a successful channel into two. I may be wrong, but my guess is that you risk slowing down the growth of one channel and struggling to build the other one.

Interested to read other people's opinions though...

I'm not so sure about that.. For instance, "techguyweb" on YT covers pretty much the same content (except just in the coding niche), yet the engagement is about 10x, views are quite more, subs, etc..

As for design channels, you will find the same thing across several channels -- namely Photoshop channels. There are several dedicated Photoshop only channels that make mine look small, for instance.

Like the one guy said I feel like splitting off might not be the right move. I'm not really sure what to suggest though to help you improve in the area you want to other than keep doing what youre doing. Your content seems very valuable to me.

I would parlay your existing audience into a renewed interest by opening up the content you put out. I ran a blog before on web design and internet marketing, but I covered various aspects of the genre including industry news. Come up with a way to keep on topic, but expand it. Keyword research may be a good start at finding some ideas related to what you cover already.

This sounds like a good idea for sure. I second this advice haha :)
