Should I be discouraged?

Hi All,

I recently started a YouTube channel called The Gameplay Files, I was very nervous about doing as it can be a very intimidating place. But I wanted to do something I loved. Talking about video game is a passion of mine and I have always wanted to do a game review type show. I know their are thousands of these on YouTube.

I started to upload content that I am relatively proud of. However the only views I seem to be getting is the ones I get when running an ad campaign. Everytime I do this I feel like i'm cheating.

I have 13 subscribers but the majority of them are friends. I wanted your honest opinion as to whether or not my videos are any good. Everyone I asked liked them but i'm not sure if they are being kind.

I know I am not going to please everyone and I know I cannot expect subs over a metter of a few months but I wondered should I carry on. I want to as I really enjoy doing but I want people to watch and like my vids.

Your opinion is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well number one, I would not feel bad about advertising. The whole name of the game is to get your content out to as many people as possible. Another suggestion, I think it would help to upload more regularly, even have a schedule if possible. It might also help to do reviews of new games, and get those out as soon as the game comes out. Example - my channel is not gaming, but I made a video "Destiny: The Taking All My Money" to coincide with the Destiny: The Taken King release.

I watched your last video and i liked it. That was fun to watch and interesting.
Keep doing that, good job (and you had the courage to make a 10min video about that awful game named Rise of the robots! :eeks:). ;)

The aim for me is to talk about all games. Retro games is my specialty but I love games as a whole. Was thinking about doing a lets play of Mario Maker recently but again, I know there are just so many let's play videos out there I was waiting to have more subscribers before doing them.

I really appreciate the feedback though guys. It means a lot and will all help me grow and improve as a content creator.

I'm really surprised that you don't have more subscribers! Your content is good but I think I found the problem. I'm just having a guess here but I think most people prefer modern games over retro games because that's whats all over YouTube and social media and stuff. At this point in your channel you should do experiments with your videos to see what works and what doesn't. For example, why don't you take a game like Super Mario and compare how it has changed over time since it's retro days and today ?

I think you need to carry on. It really does take time for your views to take off. Just keep making good content and the views will come.

Your videos are interesting and informative. I think the main reason you're not getting views without running ads is because nobody is searching for the games you are making videos about. After all they need to be searching for them in the first place to watch them. Also I don't think ads are cheating because all it's doing is showing your content to a wider audience. Just keep doing what you're doing and I'm sure your channel will grow.

Don't forget that everyone started out small and that it takes months, maybe years for a channel to grow and the way I see it, there's an audience for everything.

You are good in speaking but your thumbnails are quite bad. You must improve them - there is too much black and dark in them. They must be more inviting to click.
Sorry I just had few minutes to check your channel - also keep in mind that you need to be able to generated long watch times - individual people watching multiple videos from your channel - so it may take a lot of time before the algorithm starts to promote you for retro games or whatever is your target niche.

Thank you all so much for your feedback. I have been toying with idea of doing some let's play videos on some newer games. I see your point that no one may be looking for the games I'm reviewing.

Again thank you all. I'm glad you like the vids and i'll also work on making my thumbnails better.
