SEO... Does it Work? Yes, and No...

SEO has worked for me in the past... I would change the title of videos and search for basic terms that peope would look for and change things until my video showed up near the top. BUT, some other factors people have described in here must be true, such as popularity, viewing time, etc. My stun gun video suddenly started getting around 750 to 1000 views a day recently, so I did a search for just "stun gun". Now out of 128,000 search results, my video shows up 10th from the top. Before it would not even register even if I put the exact title of my video. So I'm guessing Youtube moved it to the top even though nothing has changed but popularity. So the ol' algorithm is still a mystery to me!

In regards to making sure you are the top on the searches, I think there is only so much you can do. Everyone is trying to do the same thing, so I would think that the odds would be against you. But even making sure that you appear up in the right searches on the first page can help.

Been working with an animation team that is making a work based on the walking dead and the concept videos have been getting considerably more views now that I have done some SEO work on them :)

Actually. You would be surprised how bad many people are at SEO. This is also of course due to the fact that the way the SEO works always changes.

Whoa your plant makeout video is the first video like that I've ever seen... The closest thing to that is watching CoP jump onto a cactus.

Do a search for "candy review" and that should let you know what SEO means to us. 10 months ago we hadn't even done any candy review videos yet. So I am convinced it can be very effective in a short period of time!

lol I don't see you guys on there at all.... The main point I had on this though was that my video never landed in the top when searching for stun gun. After doing nothing at all to change the video tags or description, it is now 10th from the top out of 128k results. BUT, I have seen my search ranking change as soon as I changed the video title before. Now if you look up CIWS, my two most viewed videos rank 1 and 8 in search results. Before I started optimizing SEO, they didn't rank anywhere near the top, but within a few minutes I got them to rank near the top just by messing with the title and tags.

I do not know the exact algorithm, but I know it is based off of so many different factors. On your side it is mostly from your title, description, tags, ect. Then for the other things there's of course views, likes/dislikes, amount of subs, all those sorts of things are put in to the equation.

Here is what I think is going on with YouTube. I've noticed some of my videos picking up after it's been up for over 60 days. I think YouTube will promote your video to handful of people or rank it higher on select few searches. If people click and watch, YouTube evaluates the results and adjusts from there. If it gets decent retention and watch time for a specific search term or content type, YouTube may try to increase the exposure a bit. If it gets bad results, it gets pushed down even further.

I think it's a similar way Facebook promotes posts on your newsfeed. The more likes a post gets, the more newsfeeds it will appear on. Granted, Facebook and YouTube are completely different animals. Veritasium did a great video related to this about what Facebook does. It's called "The Problem With Facebook" under his 2veritasium channel. It's worth checking out. You guys can draw your own parallels to YouTube.
