Self Promotion

That would depend on your definition of self-promote. If you mean spamming "I'm so awesome check out my channel!!" Then no, I think people won't connect with you if you do that, but you have to promote your channel. The chances of people just "finding" you on YouTube and then you becoming YouTube famous aren't good. Know your channel, give good content and build your channel to fit your target audience. There's a lot more to building up a good channel then just adding videos.

I've done a little self promotion..no shame in it, everyone probably did at some point (at least I like to think so), it hasn't really helped me, got me a few views here and there and a sub or two but overall didn't really help out much.

I also like to talk to people I meet in real life (I am not shy whatsoever) and before I leave mention that I make videos and when they ask I tell the what I do and my name and they usually say I will check you out. This was pretty successful during VloggerFair* in Seattle , especially since I made myself business cards. I think I forgot to mention Business Cards in my first post lol

*VloggerFair was a first time event here in Seattle, it was like a mini VidCon and a few Big YouTubers were there and people flew in to come

Basically, what I'm getting is don't spam because spam sucks, but social media spam is ok as long as it's not spammy spam.[DOUBLEPOST=1374541804,1374541597][/DOUBLEPOST]

If self promotion did not help, what did?

Pretty much. Twitter is a great Best Friend to YouTube and they can stand a lot more bickering from the other, just not from themselves, if that makes since :D I'd consider other social media to be promotion though and there can be such a thing as over promotion.
