Scripted?

Do you script?

I just want to know how many people script their videos. If you do then how do you script it? I just want to find a way of scripting that I feel comfortable with and so it doesn't sound..... Scripted. Yeah....

Thanks anyway,
Finn x

We have only scripted 1 video out of 2100. Our channel is built off unscripted reactions, so scripting is way outside our comfort zone.

I cant script my stuff, its all Improv since I play off of what other people say. I did semi-script a 1,000 sub video and a channel update video and they sucked a**. It seems like you really need to be a good editor to get a scripted video good IF you come off scripted. It could be done Im sure.

If I were you, first I would film an improv version of your video, then write a small script to polish off the rough edges

I make a web series so everything for that show is scripted. You can make it less "scripted" by doing some little things. The first thing is to understand the people you are working with. You should write in their tone, use the words or phrases they use in everyday life. By doing this they will be acting less and talking more like themselves. The way you can make them more interesting is exaggerating their characteristics, if they are jovial make their character always happy and bubbly.

Another way is pacing, try not to have a lot of awkward pauses. What I have learned from out season 1 till now is that if something isn't pertaining to the story take it out, get to the point. Direction is another big part. Do not be afraid to give the people you work with directions, if you want them to inflect a certain word tell them, if they sound robotic re-shoot. At first I was uncomfortable telling my friends to do things over, so I made up excuses and threw in some instructions. I would tell them I forgot to turn on the mic and if they could act more excited on the next take. Or I would simply say I would like variety and want to try ______.

I hope this helps.

This helps so much thank you for taking the time to reply :)

I'm assuming you're talking about vlogging. Because if you're talking about a 'reaction' video, it pretty well can't be scripted.

For vlogging, I've done it both ways. I've settled on making point form notes before starting.

The problem I find with videos that are totally unscripted (just a topic in mind) is that:
  • They are generally far too long.
  • They aren't very funny or interesting.
  • Most people lack the confidence to execute solid/entertaining delivery when they aren't confident about what to say next.
I know proper editing can fix some of the points I just made, but seriously... it's not that hard to make some point form notes so at least your video follows some kind of logical order and you delivery some key/interesting/funny lines.

Thanks! This sounds like the way to go :)

I'm not saying write out your speech word for word. But I am saying make some notes beforehand so that you cover the important points, keep it concise, and seem confident that you know what you're going to say next.
