Review my cover: See You Again (Charlie Puth)

Marion Talavera

I Love YTtalk
This is my cover of See You Again by Charlie Puth without the rap part. I found it more soothing and emotional combined with the piano backing.

Please give feedback on my voice and style, because this is actually the 1st time that I am confident to actually have sang the high notes and nailed them. Please do give advice on how to improve my video editing, shooting and recording. Thanks in advance! :)

Hey Marion,

You've got a good voice but you still need to sing with even more confidence. Your voice sometimes wavers a bit even though you're right on key most of the time, and that is really mostly just nervousness. Also work on your breathing control, it will help with the strength of your voice. Other than that you have a nice voice with the potential to be a great voice. Keep singing, it will come in time. Your falsetto was on point...very nice.

As far as filming I would just say you'd be better off, in my opinion, if you composed yourself left of center instead of dead center when you are singing on an angle to the camera like that and with the mic in frame. When you're in the center of the frame like that with the mic on the right, there is some awkward empty space on the left. A little is okay, but that is too much. Think 'rule of thirds' http://www.slrlounge.com/stills-motion-composition-video/ That is a good article that talks about rule of thirds. I know a lot of cover singers compose themselves in the center of the frame as well and I think that's fine when you're singing by yourself and right at the camera, but the way you are on an angle and with the mic I think the video would be more pleasing if you were off to the left a little more (in other words rotate the camera a little to the right). At the very least try it out and see how it looks.

Anyway, good luck!

I appreciate you taking this time to give feedback! :)

What do you mean "sometimes wavers"? Just a little confused coz dont know what that means :( But your right, singing this song was a little risk for me because it was really high. :)

Wavers...like shakes slightly, and in a way that is not vibrato. Your voice just needs to be a bit stronger in spots...a bit more confident. I thought you hit the high notes fine though for the most part.

Can you please tell me which part of the song I wavered? So I can improve it, thank you William! :)

It's not really something where you can say 'I'm gonna work on that part better'...it could have happened and any part...it's great that you've been more confident and aren't afraid to tackle the higher notes/falsetto, etc, but you still have to sing with more confidence and I think you can also improve your breathing/diaphragm so that you have more power. But here:

0:46-0:54 there is wavering at 0:46 and again toward the end of that line at 0:54. By contrast, you end the next passage great at 0:59 "feeling much worse"...really nailed that last note, it was on tune and smooth...same thing with the next few words that ends at 1:05...sounds good. Then at 1:06 it's kind of rough and you falter slightly and your voice wavers, having trouble with those couple notes.

I don't have time to go through the entire song again but I think you ended up pretty strong. Like I said, the falsetto was strong...you were hit and miss on some of the other sections though. Keep in mind, I am a terrible perfectionist when it comes to singing and I'm never happy with my own singing (I am karaoke quality at best haha - http://www.singsnap.com/karaoke/watchandlisten/play/bf96d4d9a) but I am a musician and I notice things that the average person probably wouldn't.

Anyway, keep singing...I'm looking forward to your next song. I also like the duet you did with that girl.

Thank you, it means alot to me!

Though I do try to add some grit/roughness to my voice because of a singer I admire. Hopefully I'd combine it with smoothness in the future so i can make it look confident. :)

Hey man!

I've listened to it and I really like that you've made your own version of it. The singing is great once again, camera work is great too honestly I think you should keep going like this! You'll get better and better. Something you might consider doing is creating an outro asking people to like your video or subscribe to you. This way you'll get more traffic and you video might get ranked in the search results causing you to get more views.
