Retention Rate vs. Watchtime

I read somewhere that longer videos do better because the total watch time is longer given the same retention rate. That logic holds true if your retention rate stays constant. For kids channels like others have said, this doesn't work. Kids are like adults on red bull, they watch for 30sec, then move on to something new. Also they don't have patience for commercials up front.

For really young kids I feel like parents behavior is important. For example for my kiddos I avoid videos that are too long because I want to control screen time. But I noticed that longer videos always show up on top when I search.

At the end, I feel like it depends on your niche and the behavior of your target audience.

If anyone wants to delve deeper into this, watch Derral Eves' new video from his VidCon presentation: 'Decoding The New YouTube Algorithm 2017 - How To Grow Fast on YouTube Pt. 2.' Part 1 is good too. Matt Gielen also posted his latest presentation on tubefilter in June and it's insightful: http:// www. tubefilter .com/2017/06/22/youtube-algorithm-research-cracking-the-code/

Thanks Painter for those links. Some good new points from Derral, some stuff I was not aware of.

You're welcome, KTR. If you have the time, check out Roberto Blake's video: 'Cracking the YouTube Algorithm After #VidCon: YouTube Live Q&A.' He breaks down something interesting that he refers to as the 'Cornerstones of the YouTube Algorithm.' Which consists of: Watch Time Velocity, Overall Watch Time, Session Time Overall, Session Starts, Frequency of Uploads, Playlists, and Average Video Duration. He basically confirmed what Derral shared in his presentation, however, it was nice to hear his perspective on it.
