Render video as .mp4, .mov, or .wmv?

For me:

MP4 Pros -
Fast rendering (if using GPU to render)
compatability with devices (i think youtube processes MP4 quicker)

MP4 cons -
Large files (about 600MB for 15 minutes)
Not as good quality
Lots of codecs, sometimes youtube gives me out of sync audio for no reason

WMV Pros -
Good quality
small(er) files (about 400MB for 15 minutes)

WMV cons -
Slow rendering time (no option for GPU rendering)

MOV pros -
Errr....

MOV cons -
rubbish quality
large files
out of sync audio sometimes

All in all i use WMV for most of my videos but if i need to render quick or a very large video then i use MP4, i usually use 4Mbps for WMV but using 4Mbps for MP4 gives me crap quality unlike with WMV so i use about 6Mbps for MP4.

What codec are you using? MP4 usually has pretty good quality when I render around 4.7MBPs in Vegas 13, also even on CPU rendering it renders pretty fast. WMV is Window's own built in file formate for video files, like @Pyregamingyt said it has slow render time when compared with other file formats using different codecs.

I do find the end video to have frame drops regardless of what program I use. It makes the end video appear laggy.

I can't speak for .mov files since they're exclusive to Quicktime by Apple.

I recommend you go with h.264 .mp4.
 
i dunno what codec i use i just click on MP4 lol in sony vegas 13, the only thing that i change really is bit rate. A 4Mbps WMV video is like the same quality as a 8Mbps MP4 video and far less smaller file size
 
I always use MAGIX MOVIE EDIT PRO and render video into AVI format, wow highest quality but large file!! Then I import it into movie maker to get a compressed file in mp4 :D QUALITY IS MAINTAINED :D
 
I say go with mp4, the file sizes are really good for the quality you get from them. avi is just too big and wmv is pretty dated. mp4's also have a lot more compatability with software and devices. I used to record avi files (the file sizes were colossal!) and Sony Vegas wouldn't let me use them which wasted a video.

Now and I record mp4 and export it at high quality of about 14 - 18mbps bitrate. It's quite high but when Youtube gets a hold of it and compresses it to about 4 - 6mbps I'd rather it compress a high quality video than a low one. Same with framerates, there's actually a difference if you have 60fps clips and make a 30fps video, it will produce smoother results than 30fps. I always recommend going in as high quality as possible until it has to be compressed down on youtube. Even a high quality mp4 has a low filesize.

Render times also depend on the filetypes of your clips. If you have a bunch of avi clips and render it into a mp4 it's going to take a lot longer than if you had used mp4 clips.

mp4, mp4, mp4..I don't know how many times I've said mp4.

Go with mp4 :)
