Removing Background Noise - New Sound Software?

So I have a "Blue Snowball" microphone which is good. But with all of my videos I pick up a significant amount of background noise. Usually it is just the sound of my really loud laptop. I don't think the problem lies with my mic though. My thoughts are that it is from the sound software I use. Right now I just use a free software that I found on Google. I don't even remember its name. Please let me know what you have found to be the best sound software (preferably free) or even just let me know what you think my issue is.

Thanks

It is your mic, but trust me its a simple fix. Download audacity. After you recorded your commentary, record about 5 seconds of pure silence. Highlight the recorded silence and click > Effect > noise removal > get noise profile. Then delete the 5 secs of silence layer. Highlight your commentary and click > effect > noise removal > okay.

There you go GF background noise/static.

It could be your mic, but you should be able to get rid of a lot of background noise with Audacity.

Great tip, made a lot of differences to my commentaries, much appreciated :)

It's worth noting how far away from the mic you are. The further you are, the less power from your voice is hitting the diaphragm of the mic. This usually means you need to set the gain higher than would normally be required and increases the overall volume of the background noise relative to your voice. It also introduces an echo.

Condenser's are sensitive in general, so keeping it near a Loud Laptop won't help, I have my Snowball on Setting 2 which reduces its sensitivity by -10db and have it relativity close to me (maybe 3-4 inches away with a Pop Filter in between), my PC's fans aren't that loud though.

Just for added info, for those not using a Blue Mic this is generally referred to as a "-10db pad".

Would this work for audio in videos to or would it through of syncing the audio and video in editing?
