So I've got to the point where I've got a decent handle on how to rank videos on the first page of search and drive in traffic that way, at least for less competitive terms - and I think I've even come up with a new strategy to dominate the super competitive search terms (testing it out now, so will be a few months before I'm certain if it's working the way I intend).

Now the thing is, I've noticed that the thing that's been causing an even bigger jump in views than search rankings lately is suggested videos/related videos.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows how suggested videos/related videos work. Do I need to do anything different to what I do to rank my videos in search? Are there any ways I can encourage my video to be suggested to people who watch a specific video via tags etc if I think my video provides a relevant follow up to what the person was talking about?

It's the same concept as searchable tags. People who are also working on SEO will be using similar tags to yours. The more closely related your tags are between other videos, the more likely you'll be suggested. There's also the "trick" of using tags of other Youtuber's names (e.g. tagging your video with "pewdiepie"), but YouTube has taken a stance against this in their policy terms.

Along this line, though, are other factors that YouTube takes into account. If you are indeed suggested, it also matters how often others actually click onto your videos from the video that suggested yours. The more clicks it receives, the better "ranked" you are in the suggested column. Moreover, it's important that the viewers that do in fact click to your video actually stay and watch it. If they click your video but then quickly click away, it will work against you. That is why clickbait-type thumbnails or poor content are usually not suggested.
 
Anything you can do to help encourage algorithmic association between your channel and the other channels where you want to be suggested will help. Some ways this can be done is mixed playlists, cards, annotations. Mostly it's building authority in a specific category that you want to get placed into.

For example, if I want to get suggested for "PJ Masks", I have to make 5-10 "PJ Masks" videos mirroring seo of bigger channels' PJ Masks' videos. Assuming the keywords have high demand, and I have sufficient channel authority to back it up, it is likely 1+ of my PJ Masks videos will be featured on the larger channels' PJ Masks videos.
