Reddit isn't so bad, it's just a bunch of forums all on one site. And instead of recent threads being at the top the popular ones are.

Is it possible that you're just looking at the homepage? To really make it more useful you'll want to do a search and find a subreddit on the topic you're interested in. For example www.reddit.com/r/gaming

I sometimes browse Reddit but I never post, I don't really know the community and the last time I did post I got slammed.

Reddit is awesome.

It's a collection of tens of thousands of webpages. Each with it's own tops called subreddits.
You can subscribe those subreddits you are most interested.
Each page gives you the ability to post a picture or video. Each link you post has a comments section. Also people upvote or downvote. Topics that are upvoted make it to frontpages. Topics that are downvoted are deleted and disappear from reddit!
