Reddit Shadow Ban

I've Got It
Ok, so I rarely post on reddit, but I figured I would try a small bit of marketing tonight. I found some relevant sub reddits for my YT vids, and posted a link in them. Keep in mind I read the rules of each sub reddit, and all allowed me to do so. A few minutes ago I get a message from a moderator letting me know I had been shadow banned. I had never even heard of this and so I looked it up. Seems it's something they do to prevent spam. Has anyone else ran across this? I posted 1 video in about 5 different sub red's. Each was a different video relevant to that sub reddit. I'm not sure what to think about this as it was new to me. I get trying to prevent spam, but I literally posted 1 video in 1 sub reddit. I'm typing this and its confusing me so to clarify, I have a game video, i posted it in the game thread. I had an aquarium video it went in the aquarium thread. Continue on for 3 more random videos. Every link was different. It's not as if I posted the same video 100 times in 100 different reddits. Anyone ever experience this?

It's a normal thing.
Far more prevalent if you've never even engaged in discussion in that SR prior to posting your own content.

If you plan to use Reddit in the future, you're gonna have to get used to it.

That seems harsh to me. I'm shadow banned from the subreddit dogvideos and the moderator told me he doesn't know why. I think my whole channel is banned because I tried to post with a different Reddit account and it still didn't work. Lots of other subreddits do work for me.

Yh, It is weird and reddit is really harsh plus a lot of the gaming communities are really toxic. If someone doesn't agree with your opinion oh they will let you know in the most rude and angry way possible. But basically by rediqquette rules on promotion it says that "a general rule of thumb is that 10% or less of your posting and conversation should link to your own content"
90% of your posts you have to be engaging with the communities through comments (and posts that contribute to the community - this shouldn't link to your own content). Just remember though just because a community says you can do something reddit rules may not agree with it. I think that this is just a learning curve anyway and reddit is really harsh regardless, I try to avoid it because people stress me out on there but I do comment from time to time. But I'd suggest you contact an admin on there and try to get him to sort it since I don't see why a new reddit user should be shadow banned so early. Everyone on reddit knows that they make mistakes when they start out, there is no question about that. Make sure you explain yourself properly don't just sent him/her a sentence. Write it properly so they can empathize with you and since you are new make sure you let them know that you are there to learn. It might only just be a misunderstanding by them too.

Shadowbans are not subreddit-specific. If you are shadowbanned on reddit, you will still be able to post comments and submit links, but nobody will actually see what you're submitting.

If you make a new account and immediately start posting links only, reddit will automatically shadowban you. They won't let you submit tons of links as a new user, you have to gain some karma first. Shadowbans are not a normal thing. If you're smart about sharing links to reddit, you won't have any problems. It's a good practice to actually get involved in reddit first, get a good amount of karma, then start posting links to your own stuff. I post my stuff pretty regularly on an account with 7,000 link / 10,000 comment karma and have never had a problem.

A good thing to know with submitting to reddit is that you can't trick them. You can't pull off blatant self advertising as well as you can in, say, the Youtube comment section.

Self promoting on reddit is viewed similar to going to another youtubers video and just asking people to check your channel out. If you go on there posting your own stuff a lot, you won't have a good time.

Just as an update, a few pm's later to the reddit mods, they un shadow banned me so I'm good to go now. I think the whole thing is silly I guess. You go on a sub reddit, and post 1 link, and everyone jumps on to flame and yell spam even though the rules of that SR clearly state self promotion is ok. I've been on forums before where people will come in and post a thread, and then repost the same thread like 20 times and completely take up the whole first page. That is what I personally would consider spam. But I digress, I guess I will just have to tread carefully around those parts.I'm glad the folks on this board are much more friendly.

Well that's ready. They generally don't like self promotion even if it's theoretically allowed. It's most effective when you are known for helping out there and not for self-promotion just like in any other community.
