Hello! We are a daily vlogging couple but have wanted to try out some gaming videos just to see how they go down. We would love some quick beginners advice such as - how long is appropriate, things to avoid, should we add music?

Thank you for any help!

If you add music, make sure it doesn't mesh with the audio of the game (if you have it included), ten minutes is ideal, though fifteen if you really want to go the limit. In the end, just make sure you play games that YOU want to play, not what is hot, or what other people want. Your audience can sense if you are having fun! :D

Depending on the type of game the length of the video can vary, shooter games like call of duty tend to be shorter around 6 minutes while minecraft can push 20+ minutes so it depends on what you want to play. Music is good just make sure you can use the music and that it isn't loud enough that you become hard to hear, also make sure it matches what your playing a calm game doesn't need a heavy metal sound track lol. As for things to avoid I say just don't pick a game where it takes a lot of previous knowledge to understand the game or you might alienate people and don't play games you won't enjoy other than that have fun and your audience will enjoy the video.

If it's a lets play, no probably not. If you're doing the commentary after the fact and can stretch the speed of the video to fit the length of each carefully chosen song, and you are careful of audio levels to be sure it's not over taking your commentary (comm is the heart of a channel IMO), then yes, yes and yes, you should add music. After doing it a bit you'll get a natch for fitting the right length song to fit that part of the video's length and mood which can really add to the ambiance of a video with the entire goal being increasing retention time (for success) or for me I like the sound of music to game play, so win win.

Thank you everyone :) Making the video really gave me a whole new perspective on Gamers and how hard it is to make a great video - you guys are great!
