Psychology behind 1k views

Gaijillionaire

I've got a yen for being in Japan!
theres been some threads about when a video becomes successful, but it had me thinking. If your video is under 1000 views, you know exactly how many views it has and everyone can see it. If it has over 1000,it simply says 1k. It could be 1001 or 1999, you won't know until you click it. Same for 2k and up. In a way, I consider making that mark, a kind of success.

Does seeing a video with say, 307 views compel you to click on it less? Does a video with 1k, 2k, etc compel you to click more? Maybe with the thinking that "oh a thousand people checked this out , so I will too" and of course the reverse "this video can't be very good, it's only got 492 views"

As a side note, some countries like Japan, separate numbers in sets of 4 so this change over doesn't happen until 10000. Meaning if a video has 9999 views you still see it all, then after 10k it's obscured.

Ok talk about it!

For me, i will going to check them both, especially if i am trying to search about something on the search engine. This is because the video that has number of views less than 1K, might have very good quality content but its SEO is bad. That's why it has low exposure and hence low number of views. Similarly, the second one which has over 1K views might have low quality content than the first one. However, its good SEO has boosted its number of views.

For small numbers, I would still give it a chance if they have a good looking thumbnail or good title. Then it depends on if they could grab my attention in the first few seconds rather than look at numbers. Same procedures for bigger channels to be honest but with the extra fast forward to see if anything changes in the video.

Though I have to say, before I became a content creator myself, I never found smaller channels except after clicking a lot of suggested videos for a very long time which by then I'd be tired and be very hard to amuse. Small channels are really hard to find as well if we don't intentionally search for specific things on youtube.

Anyways, in English, every number is shown no matter how small or big you are. So I don't really experience that sort of thinking.

I totally get where you're coming from. It's like when you're buying something for $1.99 as opposed to $2. Very worthless difference, but the $1.99 seems more attractive. I think at the end of the day we shouldn't focus too muhc on the numbers because there are hidden, undiscovered gems everywhere! :)

I've touched on this before it's called "sheep-herding" basically, people are more drawn towards clicking/liking/subbing people or videos if it has a good amount already. A 10 million sub count channel? Must be good *CLICKS SUB -- Or for example if a video has a s**t ton of dislikes, it'll just incline you more to dislike it etc etc - yeah psychology does take effect into this somewhat

O this is true for me. Rather than the amount of views, I tend to look at the number of likes and dislikes of the video sadly. I rarely click on the like/dislike button myself but it has made me not watch the video if there's a lot of dislikes especially for tutorial/howto/review videos.

I'm a small youtuber, but I still head towards crowd mentality when it comes to popular videos. My preferred videos to watch are machinery and also woodworking videos. I go for the higher numbers because I know I'm less likely to be disappointed, anything under 100 views after a week is more likely, in my experience, to produce a disappointment. Over 100 views and I'll try it, I've been proved wrong before, but I can count the number of times on one hand that a super low view count has impressed me.

Like my own videos, when I was starting out, my videos were awful, there was a reason I wasn't getting more than 20 views on a video in a month.

My process of thought:
Thumbnail => Title => Like ratio (using a chrome plugin) => views.
If a video has millions of views but all I can see is a red bar underneath the thumbnail (because it was overwhelmingly disliked) then there's no point in watching it.

What is the name of the chrome plugin that you use. This seems great tool to install in my PC. Thanks.
