Based on my own experience as a youtuber collaborations has its ups and downs! Now this is just my own personal opinion so I am cool if you do not agree however here are some pros and cons that I think of collaborations!
PROS:
1. Cross Promote
When two channels start promoting each other on their channels, they are literally mixing the viewers together, which equals MORE views for both sides! This works extremely well if both channels are doing similar things. This is a great way to help your channel grow and definitely useful if your just starting out!
2. Sharing Tips
Obviously some youtubers know more things then others! In collaborations both youtubers can share and give advice for the other. One might be an expert in thumbnails and channel art while the other is an expert in promoting and marketing! Sharing tips with each other benefits eachother and will help you gain more knowledge!
3. Dual Commentaries
Now this might not apply unless you know the other youtuber very well! When youtubers do a video together that is TWICE as better and TWICE as fun! Viewers enjoy hearing conversations as they can learn more about who you are as a person and can even just laugh more! This technique will help both channels grow!
CONS:
1. Uneven Rewards
Sometimes when two channels cross promote one channel will get MORE viewers then the other. This can create tension if one of the youtubers gets angry at the other person. Now the problem is that it is NOT the youtubers fault, its simply just that the viewers prefer the other guy better! So be careful that cross promoting can lead to unfair splits!
2. Taking Advantage
One channel might promote more then the other channel does. Yes, I have seen many cases where a channel tricks another channel into doing shout outs and the channel does not do shout outs back. There are very sketchy people out there who will try to take ADVANTAGE of you! Be careful of who you collab with!
3. Dominance more then Team work
I can not tell you HOW MANY channels in collaborations ALWAYS want to be the leader! It is pretty unfair when one channel makes all the decisions and does NOT allow the other channel to really say their opinions. Personally its like your giving your channel to another person to control. Do not let that happen! Remember it is about team work and that no one is in charge of you!
So collaborations can be good or bad depending on how you see it! I have never done a collaboration and I can tell you that my channel is doing well! I recommend collaborations to small channels, but once your channel gets big it is best to move on on your own! Hope this helps! Peace!
