Promoting your videos?

I wondered what you do (if anything) to promote particular videos outside of your main social platforms. Do you reach out to reddit or hacker with particular content and have you had any success?

I've had a couple of my videos get in the millions of views because social networks with lots of following (ie LifeHacker, TipHero, etc.) shared them. Oddly, these videos were shared YEARS after they were originally made so that spike in views was cool and really unexpected.

I'm not talking about your run-of-the-mill, standard content here. I know I can speak for me in saying that all the videos I think are going to be some of my most loved and shared content really don't climb in views, and the least expected ones get crazy engagement. I'm sure you can relate. lol.

I'm talking about short, sweet and highly-digestible content...with a lot of likes, shares, and engagement already from your subbies..and seeing how promoting those videos would take them to the next level.

I've never done any promotion besides my own platforms. Maybe this kind of thing really only happens organically?

Thoughts appreciated.
 
I always promote my channel on Facebook groups that are related to YouTube promotion. I made my fan pages on FB, Twitter, and Tumblr. I might sign up for Vines, Instagram, Pinterest and many more. In this way I will get more promotion.
 
Over the years I've build a long list of places to promote my new videos. These places fall into three categories: main social media; niche fora; more general places to promote videos like Reddit and 4chan.
 
Me I just promote in twitter although it will just gain me 100 added views but it's already a big help.. :) maybe I can also add other social sites to help me gain views.. But then I'm already busy with managing time looking for more networks to watch every vids.. I found it easier to connect with other youtubers because they help you go higher.. Even if they have lots of subscribers and views they still reach to small youtubers like me.. So what I am just doing now is adding and taking care of those friends who gave mutual friendship with me.. :)
 
I do videos of shelter cats and dogs. Some videos get put on the shelter's FB page when the person in change of FB feels like it, but it's not a high priority compared to other posts. I post in Reddit on some smaller subreddits and that works out well most of the time for getting views.
