Has anyone promoted their video using the google feature. If anyone has any tips on this, I think it could be a good investment... If it works that is.

Find a relevant Google + community and share there. I go to the veteran, military, and dog ones and get plenty of +s. A lot are for pics though, but the videos do ok

I've gotten a pretty good amount of views...or +1 things (I don't actually understand those yet) from google+. I share my videos with the communities I relate to (which is Youtubers!, and Vlogging) and it's helped get some extra views. And yeah, just make sure where you put is is relevant.

I am actually going to be doing this and I have been speaking to a mate who used it when he was growing a little. His channel is now on about 3400 subs and is gaining 50 a day without promotion.
He suggested to use the per day option rather than just choosing how much you would put in maximum as then YouTube just pushes it all out in one day which isn't good. So if you use £1 per day then just make it stop when you don't want to spend anymore so maybe after a week or something.
Also look into your analytic and see which countries most your views come from. The when you use the promote tool you can select that only people in those 3 countries can see the advert. This then narrows it down a bit allowing you to get more out of your advert. Then also select what your channel is about so maybe gaming, shooting games, sport games. Then you can select that only people with those interest see the advert allowing you to get much more out of the advert.
After all this just choose which advert you want, i suggest in stream so it shows at the start of videos, this also includes the other way but it just focuses on in stream ads.
You only pay if the video is viewed for 30 seconds or till the end of the video whichever is first.
Once you have spent £25 on the promote tool so maybe you spend £1 a day for a month (£30) which will get you about 3-5 subs a day then they actually give you £75 of free promotion. So overall for about £30 you will grow a good 300 subscribers and plenty of views as well.
