Promote VS Advertise

I Love YTtalk
OK, is it just me or is it semantics.

When I see the word advertise, it is as if you are paying to promote your (video). The word promote doesn't necessarily mean that there is money involved.

If you are using a Facebook account to make people aware of your videos, in my head, that means promote/promotion.

So is it semantics or are the words interchangable?

I'm not sure but I am the same as you when someone says Advertise I automatically think they are using adwords but when they say promote I think twitter/forums/facebook etc.

You are correct, promotion does not always involve spending money. Advertising is just one form of promotion.

i feel they are different , i can promote your video because i like it, or you can pay me to advertise your video, either way you get the extra boost but one is free one is paid

Technically advertising is a subset of promotion, as it is a form of promotion. However not all promotion is advertising. ;)
