Planning on doing a The Walking Dead Playthrough

Sorry to be posting here again, but it wouldn't let me post this on the gaming forum, basically I have an idea of playing the walking dead, and doing a reaction video to it, where I shall be commentating throughout, I know this is a slightly smaller and older game then other games I could do.
I am planning on using a screen recorder obviously on the game and also record myself playing it as well so it would be screen on screen in the final video if that makes sense? So my viewers would be able to see me playing and speaking throughout the game, rather then just hearing me over the top.
Basically I am posting this here because I want to know if there is any way I would be able to monetenise this video, I am not currently part of any network as I am not big enough sadly, and I would be skipping some parts of the game, like cutscenes and conversations etc which aren't important towards the main storyline.
I heard it can be monetenised as long as you are commentating throughout, and would I have to turn subtitles off? I often play with subtitles even though I don't need too.
If not I will just use it to attract people to my channel but obviously like I have posted before it would be nice to be able to earn money on the video, and of course if I do any others in the future, as thats the main point behind my channel to earn money and its frustrating having popular videos, that i can't earn anything on.
Thankyou!

The first thing to do is to find out whether or not the publishers allow youtube video monetization of their games. You can do this by contacting them or by looking online.

From what I found online, it appears that Telltale Games does not allow youtube monetization of their games.

Obviously there are some youtubers monetizing their videos of The Walking Dead because networks allow instant monetization, assuming there are no third party matches, (or they have special permission) but technically it isn't allowed although the publishers probably won't do anything about it.

If you're with Adsense and try to monetize it and it goes under review and requires you to provide proof or permission, then there is nothing you can do about it.

I have done some research and they do allow gameplay videos just not allowed to monetise it, i am not big enough to join a network and i don't think a gaming network would take me as I don't just do games I do literally everything and anything I can think of
I was considering just doing it unmonetised as almost an advert for my channel to attract more subscribers, but as much as I do enjoy it as long as I get views and things, I do need the money too but then again the attention it could give my channel means I could earn more on my monetised videos
I just don't know what to do I have been considering joining a network for a while now, but seeing as i have been uploading monetised videos for over a year and only earned 2 pounds, I definetly cannot even think about going there currently
Yeah my channel kinda isnt going very far atm in terms of earnings hence why I wanted to try this
But i'm guessing commentary doesn't make any difference even though some sites I looked at said you can monetise as long as you are commentating throughout which is effectively what i would be doing.
I am just really confused right now as different sites are saying different things

Yeah, monetizing gaming videos without a network can be really frustrating and tricky. I had that problem when I first started my channel.

When you commentate throughout a video, most people think that gives you "Fair use" in monetizing it. However, this really is not the case and claiming "fair use" when trying to prove to youtube you have permission to monetize will almost never work. What you really need to proof that you own all rights to the video, which you can't for gaming videos.

If you are serious about joining a network, I recommend CreativeNation to most smaller channels. They have one of the best contracts and they accept smaller channels. 90/10, no lock-in so you get 90% and can leave at any time (after 30 days notice). I have 2 other channels with CreativeNation and they will most likely accept your channel. Having said that, that still does not guarantee you can monetize the Walking Dead videos if they have third party matches/content ID claims, which usually occurs via music and some cutscenes.

Yeah thats the thing, some cutscenes in that game have to be shown and cant really be edited out, otherwise the next part I do won't make any sense
I have founds loads of walking dead videos on youtube that have been done, no idea if monetised or not.
When you contact a company do they take into consideration how popular you are on youtube if you want to play their game?
Because all the really big gamers do it don't they and i gather they earn money from it as thats all they post and they are pretty famous!

Companies probably do cater to bigger youtubers more than smaller ones. I don't know for a fact either, whether or not bigger youtubers monetized their Walking Dead videos but I would assume they, or their network or Youtube, helped work out some kind of deal for them. I contacted a couple of game companies before (that don't allow monetization) about monetization and they all said no to me pretty quickly, but again, I would assume that bigger channels have a better chance at it.

I don't know about the cutscenes in the Walking Dead but I was doing a Let's Play for Saints Row 3 before and almost every cutscene had copyright claims. Tricky situation to be in. It's generally harder to monetize more story-based games. If no third party matches/content ID claims come up, however, then it is monetizable with a network.

ah okay well thankyou for your help, i was considering possibly going with either that network or curse I think it's called? which also has 90/10 but i don't know if they would accept me as im not only gaming on my channel, but if i get popular i may open a specific gaming channel and join a network then so i can monetise them.
Just have to see where it goes I guess, I know its extremely hard to get anywhere on youtube anyway, and the only really good videos that would get loads of views are not able to be monetised, which kinda defeats the object. But I guess before I get that gaming channel if i ever do, I can just use things like that to send people to look at my channel and view my videos where I can earn money, and try and think of things I can monetise that will also become popular.

But thankyou for the reply though :)

You don't have to join a network to post/monetize gaming videos. They don't really provide any protection in terms of copyright/monetization unless they happen to have a specific deal with the publisher. But if you will join one, yeah make sure to check out the different networks contracts. You may need a certain number of subs/views. Or maybe they'll only pay out once you've earned a certain amount of money. You can always try to post a few non-monetized videos and see if it's something you wanna do long term. It's takes surprisingly more effort than it seems to keep it doing it week after week. :thumbsup2:

I noticed you have a playthrough of Jurassic Park: The Game by Telltale Games on your channel. Well you're the perfect person for the OP to ask then. What are your experiences with monetizing those videos?

Haha I wasn't gonna point that out but it's nice to know you checked up on me :) I'm partnered with Freedom but that's only because I believe monetizing directly with YT you need a $100 minimum earnings to cash out. Since I'm still a small channel there's no way I'd hit that anytime soon. I also use my Google ad sense account for other things so if that got closed, I'd be screwed. Whereas Freedom pays through PayPal account. But anyway, no copyright claim yet. Haven't needed to contact the network about anything. I'm probably too small for Tell Tale to care :D[DOUBLEPOST=1435713157,1435713038][/DOUBLEPOST]Side note: I did have to edit out some music to prevent content ID match on some videos which then I wouldn't have been able to monetize.
