It's not bots, it's the algorithm. When new users sign up to YouTube, it autosuggests channels to sub to and pewdiepie got millions of subs that way.

Yeah, they used to (or still do??) have a "what interests you?" page where you could select what genre of videos you'd want to subscribe to. Then it would automatically show YouTubers in the genre and have a check mark next to them to "subscribe." All you had to do was click the submit button and auto-subscribe to a ton of top YouTube channels. :o I'm not sure if that's still a thing. I always "skipped" that step because I wanted to manually subscribe to people. I'm sure a lot of people new to the Tubes all subbed to the top channels, tho... :o
 
I don't get what the big deal is, I don't see his appeal, I guess I don't believe I have ever watched one of this video's iv only seen some clips of his video's. but whatever. I do know his channel name of his channel sounds annoying...lol
 
@Crown - You say that YouTube has been auto subbing people to accounts - This happened to me recently.
I am subbed to a few small car related channels (Around 100k subs) and recently they have collabed with a much bigger channel (2m+ subs)
Im not too interested in this channel and I may have viewed a few vids in the past but never subbed.
Well last week - the channel was in my subs list. I watched the latest video and thought maybe I accidently subbed to them? I didnt enjoy it enough to stay subbed so tried to unsub but it would not let me!
The vids still appeared in my list and even the following day it was still showing in my subs list. So I clicked the sub button on/off a few times and eventually I got away from it..
At the time I considered it a bug or something?

Yeah, that was how pewdiepie got a huge boost. By default, they autocheck a load of channels to sub to based on interests. If the new user doesn't remove the check mark, they sub to them.

The algo also does what @EVO mentioned above. They autosub to channels based on who else you are subbing to. It's kind of annoying and sneaky, especially when they keep autosubbing to the same channel over and over despite removing them. YouTube seems to think that "no" means "yes". If this were paid services, it'd be fraud. ^^
 
The same happened to me. I was auto-subscribed to 1,4 million subs channel only because I watched a video or two of it. Of course I unsubsccribed immidietly. I thought I subscribed to it by mistake but now I see itwas the algorithm.
 
It's just subs, not views...he has never been the #1 channel in views per day, has never had a single video get over 100 million views whereas lots of other channels have done it repeatedly. So having his sub count beaten really means nothing.
