Can someone explain to me how Pewdiepie can use copyrighted material in his videos and not get striked?
I was watching his latest (Trials Fusion) and he has bits of Akon playing along with some other s****y artists (sorry if you like them :p ).

Is this considered fair use?
Im pretty goddamn sure I would get striked if I tried that in my vids!

His network might have the rights. Or he was asked to make a video with that song in it.

Guerrilla campaigns from fullscreen sometimes ask to promote certain songs for example.

Right, I thought it was super duper expensive to get license to use music like that.
Well, it probably is. Im sure he has the money for it. :)

The above is correct, in terms. PewDiePie is actually partnered with a YouTube network called Polaris (which is a sub-network of Maker Studios)

Maker studios has signed a deal (as has Fullscreen) for their partners to be able to monetize and cover (covering is not applicable to pewdiepie) for the full library of music that is registered under Universal Music Publishing.

I'm sure if you signed with either Fullscreen or Maker (or their sub networks) you would also be able to do the same.

This is interesting, because I watch the Yogscast who are also partnered with Polaris. They never (to my knowledge) use any copyrighted music. They use royalty free stuff like incompetech and such.

Perhaps it's an intricate process of getting the rights and thats why they never went that way. Who knows.

It will totally be at the YouTubers discretion. Some may feel that inputting a song will promote the artist, which they may not want to do. Others won't really care.

If you google "Fullscreen and Maker Studios sign Universal Music deal", I'm sure more details will come up concerning this matter. (i.e. the sort of process that partners would have to go through)

Their musical artist are allowed to cover the songs, yes, but that's something completely different. That doesn't mean they can just use the original in any way, shape or form. Yes, he probably has the rights, but not through that deal.

He has the rights to them, you can be sure of that. Either from Polaris or himself, he wouldn't risk not having rights.
