Parodies/ Reviews = More views

Okay so recently I have been uploading a few abridged one shots to my ProfKrancVA channel and it has been getting a LOT of views. The subscriber count has shot up since my first abridged upload and I think I know why.

It's genre: abridging is not only attached to a popular community of videos, but its already a parody of an already established piece of content.

I believe it works the same way as gamers may get more views than a let's player or gamer. Because its based of an already established content, it is more searchable. Because its tied to an already established community, its got more potential to be shared among people. And because its what people would consider as good, it makes people subscribe and stick around for more.

This is in comparison with my other channel that posts live action, original sketches. The most viewed videos on that channel are: Final Fantasy Battle Real Life and Godzirra, a Godzilla Parody.

Again going back the previous point, because its already got an audience, its more likely to be viewed.

I guess the lesson is create videos that can be targeted at already established communities. It's what the big youtubers do and it seems to work here

Parodies and spoofs are an AWESOME way to spike your view/sub count, especially when it's on a trending and popular topic and you catch it in time.

First of all. Well done with the two episodes! They were of excellent quality!

Secondly, you are completely right in everything you write. I just checked out one of your sketches, which was also of excellent quality, and should definitely have had more views (I don't write this often!).

The problem with sketches is the following.

People reach your videos organically in two ways

A) Through searches.
B) Through related videos

Firstly, hardly anyone searches for sketches through the search engine. I mean no one would think ''hey I really want to watch a sketch about how awkward it is to buy condoms in a shop''!.

So, the problem is that all the views would have to come through related videos.... Now here is another problem..... Youtubes related videos suggestions are completely retarded when it comes to comedy sketches. If we had a video called ''Awkwardness of buying condoms in a shop'' the related videos will all be videos relating to each individual tag in some way, and not be related to other comedy sketches. So for example youtube could relate your video to a lot of scientific videos on awkwardness, because you know... hey! Your title had the word awkwardness in the title.

So the problem is that it is incredibly hard to grow organically through sketches these days. The best chance is actually reddit or facebook picking up a video and having it go viral. Of course not saying it can not be done, but it is incredibly unlikely!

Now... on the other hand... If you do parodies or spoofs, on relevant topics!

You will be able to get lots of views. For example if you spoof 50 shades of grey. You will get views from

A) Searches, for people searching for example Fifty shades of grey (which there will be a lot of since it is a trending topic!)

B) Related videos. Again every video with the topic of 50 shades of grey will be able to give your video a view through related videos. Also the title ''Fifty shades of grey spoof'', will not be able to confuse Youtubes algorithm. Youtube knows it ONLY has to focus on fifty shades of grey, when giving you related videos.[DOUBLEPOST=1426448169,1426447826][/DOUBLEPOST]Seriously though, I was very impressed by the content of your videos. Wow, thank you! I really appreciate the kind words and advice! I'm trying my best to work hard to get these out there, but truth is I may not be able to do the live action stuff for youtube anymore :-/ working on short films and in a fairly large media company right now.

Buuuuuut the abridged stuff has been taking off, so I'm like: Hey! Let's do this! Did a real power through some work and got a bunch of videos already ready to release, so i'm going to release them over the next few months.

I do think there's a market and audience for these types of videos, and I completely agree that by catering to this viewership, there is definitely more of a chance to gain a good number of views/subscribers. We've all seen how popular parodies of music videos/films are. @VictoriaFlamel hits it on the head in terms of organic growth though - especially when it comes to a trending topic.

But, yeah, good job, and thanks for sharing the advice! We're happy with what we're doing though, and even happier with the great response and growth we've received, so we're just going to keep doing our thing.
