Paid channels for everyone!

I wouldn't wanna charge people for watching my videos. Just seeing the views having 4 digits make me happy enough... but it's a good info though.

I'll be the jerk. This "rent" video option is not for any person on this or any other forum regardless of how large they are. It's not for Epic Meal Time, it's not for Smosh, it's not for Pewdiepie.

This is for HBO, CNN and all of the other broadcasters who have real solid budget shows. YouTube is attempting to put another nail in the Live TV coffin.

They may well leave it open for regular YouTubers to apply for, but don't expect widespread use, and if you do go down that road, make sure not to expect much.

It seems like everyone is assuming they expect you to turn your regular channel into a paid channel. I think the idea is more that you create a whole new channel with exclusive content that only those really interested would subscribe. That's what I'm doing at least, but I'm not really sure what to put on it yet.

Yup, that's what it seems. I'm just curious to know what YouTubers will produce with paid content and how different it will be to regular free content, as opposed to anything else that you could find on YouTube.

What exactly would you do on your new channel and paid content? My feeling is that, unless somebody is producing something special or really different, such as something you wouldn't be able to see anywhere else, then the normal YouTube viewer wouldn't bother paying to watch the videos when's there's already so much free content out there already. What would be so different that people would have to pay to view it?

I don't know if YouTube will allow this but I would like to upload my content to a channel that does not run ads. This way, if a parent doesn't want their kids to see ads, they can pay a small fee.

I get what you mean, and I assume that paid content won't have ads since the viewer is paying for the content to be produced, thus the videos wouldn't require ads since the creator and YouTube would already have received money, eliminating the need for ads. However, if the content isn't any different, why would someone pay to view it when they could view it for free by either watching a short ad, skipping it after 5 seconds or clicking the little x when it appears after 10 seconds?

The paid channels program allows the creator to decide if ads will run

Just for the hell of it, let's explore the economics of paid channels if you went completely over to the paid side and didn't do any free videos. Let's say you have 100k subscribers and are getting 1 million monetized views per month at average RPM of $4-that channel earns $4k per month. So how viable is a paid model? If that same channel went to a paid subscription, they would lose a lot of subscribers. At a 95% loss, there would only be 5000 remaining subscribers. At $2 per month, the channel would take in $10k in subscription fees, which would net the channel $5500 per month after adsense takes its 45% split. So at $2 per month and a 95% subscriber loss, that channel would still generate more income that it would before-and that doesn't include any ad money it would make from the videos. So while a lot of people say it's bad, you can see why some channels would consider it.

Exactly. It might not be for the masses but at least it is an option. I wouldn't go pay only because the free stuff is paying the bills :)
