Outro more important than intro?

We are currently using a very short intro that follows a small snippet of footage from whatever game we're playing in the video. There is an outro card also that they can click various videos on if they manage to get that far! I feel unless your a well known Youtuber it's hard to get away with too long an intro since people are more interested in seeing if they like your actual content.

Intros are unnecessary, and if they're more than 2-3 seconds long they can be damaging to retention. Endrolls with links to more videos are pretty much essential. Use endrolls with playlist links, not just regular video links.

I agree, some people simply spend too much time on intros. Just checked ur channel out and you have some great content. Keep it up !

Define essential. Most big (100k+ subs) YTers I used to follow did not do endrolls, and that was before as much as 40% of viewers went mobile where annotated links don't even work.

Helpful? Sure. Essential? I'd call that a huge exaggeration.

By essential I mean ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. Assuming one takes their channel seriously at all. It's not an exageration. Look below and see if you can tell when I started using playlists links in endrolls for all videos.

Having a standard intro just to have an intro definitely rather hurts your channel. The first few seconds need to hook the viewer with something he was searching for when he clicked on the video link.
A teaser works best for this purpose. A very (!) short intro afterwards can strengthen your branding.
So intros are more important than outros when they really are targeted towards the viewer of this particular video.
Outros then help to lead the viewer that was caught by the intro and kept interested by the content to other videos of yours (like @ThioJoe mentioned always use the playlist link to the video i.e. the link of the video in the playlist not the link to the playlist). It's absolutely okay that subscribers who already know your content leave at the end card but the opportunity to hook new subscribers is worse the audience retention drop.

Yep I agree, that's pretty much all there is to it.
