Opinion on Vine?

I have recently been looking more and more at Vine as another way to be a creator. I have been on Vine since the beginning, but never posted anything at all.

I've never really liked Vine because it was only 6 seconds and I didn't really like the people (Nash Grier, Cameron Dallas, Carter Reynolds). I now see that is it way better in terms of audience retention, because of its 6 second videos.

I have recently been offered an opportunity to be one of the first on a new app that would basically combine Vine and Instagram Video times. I said yes, because what if it is like the next Vine? It seems to be gaining some traction, but I haven't really looked into it.

I wanted to know what is you actual opinion on Vine. Is it the lazy-person's YouTube? Is it only for people who are very good looking? Is it worth moving onto Vine, while still doing YouTube?

I'm really struggling with this for some reason, I actually don't know why.

For me, it's not an alternative to YouTube but it's something that can be done along side it. It can definitely help you become more known on the interwebs :) It's definitely not only for "good looking" people, as I've seen many people find success on Vine who aren't exactly "good looking" but as with everything in life, being good looking helps :P It's not a determining factor in finding success on Vine though, or anywhere for that matter :)

Lemon dude is awesome. He's my hero.

It seems you either have to be super hawt or super funny to make Vines work though. It's worth a shot at least if you have some decently funny idea/good looks.

Most of the people on vine are untalented but are just good looking. I use to use Vine, sure the videos can be a good laugh but they don't really seem to have a lot of effort put into them as a youtube video would. Also I don't think very much new talent comes up on Vine because I don't think a lot of people use hashtags they just go to the the comedy category

To me, I think Vine can be a great platform for really short but funny clips. To me, Youtube is about videos that last more than 7 seconds (duh) and it has some kind of message behind it all. Vine is awesome for short bursts of ridiculousness and Youtube is awesome for stretching your creativity.

I've seen some really creative vines. Just like any other place, youtube, facebook etc, there is a lot of crap on there, but there are people who are really clever. And then there is Nash Grier.

I completely agree. I could never move from YouTube to Vine. YouTube is for full on videos which is what I love. You are right about the good looking thing though, I have seen many that aren't and have had major success, although those people do curse a lot more. Thanks :)[DOUBLEPOST=1421557916,1421557845][/DOUBLEPOST]
It's only for good looking people. But if it makes you feel better, i think ur a stud

Thank you so much! I must say that looking at your profile photo, you are also very handsome. ;)[DOUBLEPOST=1421558031][/DOUBLEPOST]

Agreed. I think I will give it a try, but I have to come up with some great ideas first. Thank you :)[DOUBLEPOST=1421558185][/DOUBLEPOST]

YouTube v. Vine. There is no comparison. Viners are just less talented than YouTubers, but the way they use their time sometimes with multiple angles and quick speaking is actually amazing. As for the hash tags, they all either do what you said or make up their own weirder hash tag.[DOUBLEPOST=1421558240][/DOUBLEPOST]

Very well put. I can agree with you on all of that.[DOUBLEPOST=1421558326][/DOUBLEPOST]

You are very right. *Looks at your signature* Thank you my princess. :)

I am DYING for Vine! I wish I had an app compatible device. I'd be all over that like hot gravy on mashed potatoes. (Holy hell, I'm tired. I never talk like that...)
Anyway!
Yah, I would be the master of vine! My videos are pretty much 4 minutes of vines. Little snippets of random all smooshed together into one long randomness. Vine... VINE!
Sorry...

Vine is pretty much just Snapchat except instead of the videos disappearing, they are permanent and also only 6 seconds long. How is it like SnapChat if it ignores the core feature of SnapChat? I don't think of SnapChat as just an app that allows you to send photos & videos and have them disappear, providing a level of comfort. I think of it as an app that has captured the world's attention and utilized people's desire to share with no care, on a whim & whenever they want. So how does Vine = SnapChat? Vine allows you to send photos & videos to your friends. The level of comfort that SnapChat provides (through deleting the media) is also found in Vine's video collection of people acting silly, hilarious & goofy. When you are surrounded by people that don't judge and are submitting media for the sole purpose of entertainment (plus, there's so many people on Vine you will NEVER watch every single one, which means people feel they can just blend into the crowd, providing comfort from the lack of full on attention), you end up feeling comfortable participating.

What's the point of this post?
Vine & SnapChat thrive on the same human traits and desires. They coexist. Who's to say your app can't exist too?

What is Vine?
  • Not the lazy person's YouTube
  • Not a replacement for YouTube
  • Full of marketing potential
  • Personal branding
Marketing Potential is the ability to publish low risk (for time wasting) media. People are very likely to watch a Vine even if the title or thumbnail isn't fully interesting. Why? Because they could find the 10 worst and most boring Vines ever and still have only wasted a minute of their life. Compare that to a 10 minute video that provides nothing to the viewer except their false hope of "maybe it gets better after 5 minutes" (which deceptively convinces them to keep watching, hoping it doesn't continue to suck).
Think of all the ways you could market in a Vine.
The Vine could be 100% commercial.
You could wear a shirt, advertising your brand or product, while you do something great on Vine.
Better idea. Wear that shirt in every single Vine you ever make.

Personal Branding is very apparent. Many people fall in love with the content a YouTuber produces, not their personality. It's the facts, information, advice, or guides they want - Not the person's humor or commentary. Sure, repeat viewers eventually fall in love with the YouTuber, but they fall in love with the specific content first in many cases. How is Vine different? If you can't be amazing in 6 seconds, people aren't going to look at your other videos. If you're a video blogger, your videos might answer some questions that viewers need answered. Or maybe they want to see your FALL HAUL, or unboxing bananas video. But on Vine, you don't answer those questions and you don't solve things for the viewer. It's just you. Due to low risk media (for viewing/time wasting), you have an easier time getting those initial views and you only need to be yourself for 6 seconds instead of 3-5 minutes straight. This means that in the end, you're spending less time and effort on content, convincing people to view the clip easily (compared to YouTube viewing habits) and are hopefully gaining them as a fan. Vine is YOU. YouTube is a MIX of You and your content.

tl;dr version
Snapchat and Vine are similar as they solve many human desires. Your app could do that too.
Vine is great for marketing your product or developing a personal brand due to the length of the videos and ease at which a Vine video is clicked on and viewed.

YES, use Vine to build your personal brand and hype up your product(s). JUST MAKE SURE you make a Vine compilation video every 20-50 videos for YouTube for even more fans.
