Number of current subs affecting how many people sub?

Hi everyone. I have been curious about this for a while now and thought to ask the community. Does the number of subs you currently have affect the number of people who sub to your channel? Or is there something else I am missing? What is the most important reason for people subbing besides video content?

I am asking this because I currently have one video (my most viewed) with 7k views. My channel has 41 subs. That specific video gave me 2 subs. Another person on youtube has a similar video which was put up around the same time. The person has 6k subs. That particular video has 2k views but has given him 17 subs!

There are no intro/outros in both the videos and no commentary either. I am just wondering if the number of subs is a deciding factor in whether people decide to sub to a channel.

It can, yes. It's the popularity factor of it. The more popular someone is, the more willing people are going to be in that person.

It's like in school. If you were to have the same phone or whatever as a popular person, more people would be interested in their phone over someone who isn't as popular. You may have the same one, but when that person is popular more people tend to be interested. I hope that made sense xD
 
I have to agree with the above two gentlemen, there is a psychology to it. Most people assume that if you have more subs, then your content is probably better, and they're more likely to sub. That's why it's so hard to get started as a small channel.
 
Thank you for the feedback guys. I guess it means the small number of people who have subscribed are even more special to me at the moment.

I agree with this.. But sometimes we'll find it difficult to undertand their behaviour, especially on the internet.. So, maybe i'll seen it as a mystery..
 
Yeah, its a forumla that it'd like to see the exact statistics too, but if you have 40 subs, people are going to think you're not that popular and not sub. But if you have 10,000 subs, people might think "im gonna get in on this guy because everyone else is", the sheep factor like someone else mentioned it completly true.

I would like to see to at what numbers do people start flocking.

The first 1000 subs is always the hardest, but I imagine if it took you 1yr to get from 0-1000, it may only take 5 months to go from 1000->2000 because of this "sheep" factor.
 
It's sad but definitely people are more willing to sub to channels that already have plenty of subs. It makes them feel like you must be worth following if other people already are, which makes the first 1000 subs by far the hardest in my opinion.
