MSI afterburner is free, gives great FPS on bad computers. Also has adjustable quality/size ratio.

The only disadvantage is it doesn't work on 64-bit programs.

I used to know one great free one, but I think its gone now. (It was called WeGame. I'm not sure if it's still around though.)

Saving up for FRAPS will give you the results you want though.

WeGame is still around. It just doesn't get any more support from the Dev team. FRAPS is definately better though.

Yeah, that would be a big help. I still manage this with FRAPS, but in order to I have to use Audacity in conjunction with FRAPS instead.
