I think one of the reasons is that YouTube isn't exactly a great platform for content discovery. And by that I mean, you want to look for a musician of some specific genre, it's very hard to find things like that. Video categorization isn't quite the best, and the Browse Channels section just kind of sucks. The layout isn't great. If I wanted to go find my channel through there I wouldn't even know where to look. (Then again that could be my fault too since my content isn't quite specific since I do comedy, music, and vlogs on one channel.) People find things primarily by search I think, and watch whatever is shared with them by their friends.
