Multiple niches in one channel affect subscribers?

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to this forum so I hope I posted this in the right place..

I'm kind of facing a dilemma with my Youtube channel. I have a channel focused on creating fun animations (not world-class but entertaining enough if you're bored). I learned that after 2012, Youtube changed it's algorithms to suit watch times and thus my channel was one of those that suffered (since I upload 1 minute of animation a month). I still kept uploading anyways but never again did I experience the kind of views I was getting prior to 2012. I sort of abandoned my channel for many months after that as I knew it would be overkill to do 10 minutes or so of animation a week to maintain watch time which would have also killed my motivation. As a result, my channel was in danger of becoming extinct.

Only recently, did I decide I'd have another shot at saving my channel and bringing it back to proper health (felt good to log back in after so long, lol). I sort of have a plan to increase watch time. And that is by doing animation tutorials. That way I can easily get in 10-20 mins of content a week and hopefully boost my watch time to at least 3 digits a week (instead of 3 digits a month). I feel like I have gained a bit of knowledge in animation over the years that I can share to the world and provide value for up and coming animators.

Would it be alright to sort of veer away from animations and create tutorials for a while? This would sort of change my niche from an entertainment channel to an education channel. It would mostly would be education as I would be uploading education videos weekly and entertainment videos monthly. I still want to create short animations and movies as that is my true passion but I know having no content for weeks/months while I produce my films really puts me behind.

I worry that my subscribers would lose interest/unsub as most aren't really interested/don't care for creating an animation themselves and thus would start seeing my channel as "spammy". But I know I also have no choice as giving what my subscribers want is not helping my channel progress at all and also seeks to hurt my motivation.

Just wanted to see what other more experienced Youtuber experts here think about this idea?

Many thanks!

It wouldn't hurt to try. For my channel I have all sorts of things happening, something for everyone really. It hasn't affected me at all & I even started introducing some new things in slowly recently, it's only done good for me so far.

I think a variety of things in your channel would be a good thing so your viewers don't get bored & you'll end up attracting more viewers with your new content :)

I think it would be a good experiment in drawing in different audiences with different niches and it might make a channel grow, though of course some people do have another channel specialized for their niche depending on how they are going to reach their audience. I have thought about branching out a little bit, but later I just focused on sticking with one niche.

That's an awesome idea. :thumbsup2: Do tutorials, how-to's and maybe even share funny news stories. like stuff going on in the media... will get lots of views. totally jealous wish I knew how to do animation. :smilingcute:

If your that worried about it, seperate the content with different play list names.

You can definitely do tutorials, because it's not out of the wheelhouse of your content. It's not like you're doing cooking tutorials in between animations, it's still kinda the same niche, you know? Plus, people get to see your process, which is always nice. Transparency goes a long way for viewers. You can also make a "making of" video after you release your animation, explaining how you made it and showing the work it takes. That would be fun to watch because of the context, as well as giving you more content that's trivial to create (since you have to do the animation anyway haha)

But yea, it sucks that Youtube pretty much ruined certain kinds of content from ever being popular. If you weren't already big for doing that before 2012, it's not possible anymore. Quantity over quality is the name of the game, because they want that ad revenue. It's sad.

Go for it! If you think you'll enjoy making tutorials to teach people something you know well have fun with it. Also liven it up as well with your monthly finished animations to entertain and give people goals from your tutorials. It wouldn't hurt either to make tutorials that are current in terms of pop culture.

Thanks a lot guys for the useful feedback :) Each of your advice/suggestions were very helpful! I guess I'll go ahead and make some tutorial vids and see how it all pans out over the next couple of weeks. Hopefully, my channel will be restored again!

My channel lost the awesome views after 2012 too so I feel your pain! They've made so much change since. I've recently started again too, but posting all kinda random stuff not just piano! I'm worrying about the same thing. I see people subbing more and unsubbing also. It's frustrating but also good learning curve :). I think you'll still be fine cuz it's still animation related! Keep it up!

Do it!At the end of the day it's your channel and it's awesome to try new stuff out!As others have said you might grab another audiences attention! If you want my opinion then do it bro!Take a risk every once in a while! :D
